Reduced my phone contract by half!

I don't quite know how I did this ...
I'm on a 24 month contract with o2 due to expire in April 2014. I'd noticed the exact tariff/phone I had was significantly cheaper than when I'd took it out the year before (which lets face it, is standard!) so I went on to webchat to mentioned it to their team, I basically wanted to reduce my payments.
Turned out I was eligible for an upgrade even though my contract wasn't meant to be up until next year. I didn't need a new phone so I'm on a 12 month sim only contract now - gone from paying £46, to just £21, my tariff is exactly the same!
My old contract has now been cancelled and I'm on this one. I've also been told, although they said "only for you" (it never is though, is it!) I can upgrade whenever I want to in the next 12 months.
Crazy, as I've saved hundreds! I was originally reluctant to ask them but I'm glad I did!

It may not be a good deal if the new contract is for 24 months (which I suspect it is).
Cost of continuing to pay on the old contract until the end of the minimum term = 10 months x £46 = £460 or possibly 9 months x £46=£414 (or somewhere in between depending on the exact expiry date in April).
Cost of new contract 24 months x £21=£504
On this basis you are well out of pocket on this arrangement.
Admittedly you will now get the sim only calls and texts for an extra 14 months, but sim only deals are incredibly cheap (or even free) these days and likely to get cheaper with time, so this may not compensate for the extra £ you will end up paying by the time the new contract ends.0 -
Hope you are not paying for 2 contracts because upgrading 10mths early Sims to good to be true

Hi
Yikes.... Now I'm worried!
New contract is only 12 months and the previous one cancelled. So hopefully all ok?! I'm on unlimited texts and calls. It was all on webchat via the O2 site, and I asked lots of questions as it did sound too good to be true so if they later say its not true, I have proof of the conversation.
I've been with them for over 10 years so hopefully it was a loyalty thing!

You were smart to have it all in writing. Keep the written record of the chat and check you bank statement just in case they are double billing.
If they do double-bill you and/or try to claim you have two contracts, with the written evidence of what was agreed you will be able to get it sorted.
People who do it all on the phone are in a much more vulnerable position.0 -
sounds like u were very lucky.
on £41/month, i assume you had a premium phone with your contract?
if they only got a years money for the phone it sounds like they could be losing money with that0 -
