Your experiences with buying a Sofa

Hi,

I hope this is the right place.

I'm looking for personal experiences with buying sofas, arm chairs (suites) from most of the big retail stores such as Furniture Villiage, DFS, CSL and similar.

I want to purchase a 3 seater Sofa in the next few months, but looking around online i am immediately put off by the above stores from review sites, but looking on some forums there are mixed reviews. Some people could not be more happy with their furniture and others have had a horrible experience.

If i'm to be honest, it's quite a minefield.

So, has anyone used any of the above stores? What's your experience been like? What was your furniture like? Was it worth the money? Has it lasted as long as you expected?

Also, if anyone has any advice in what to look for in terms of quality of merchandise and questions to ask sales people, whilst having a look around, that would be really helpful.

TY,

Rory.

Take a look at ikea for sofas as they tend to last well.
    In Progress!!!
  • I got my new sofas from Next. I was kept updated via email and took about 6 weeks from ordering to delivery. They even delivered on a Sunday morning and I am really pleased with the quality of them

I went to Furniture Village . Have had the three piece suite eight years , no problems.
I went back to buy a dining suite , on del. one chair was damaged . was quickly swapped , no fuss , no drama.

I wouldnt touch DFS with a barge pole unless the sofas were seriously cheap and i wasnt bothered about them not lasting.

Ive used Furniture Village in the past and been very happy.

My last sofas were from Hopewells in Nottingham which is a family run business and i found that even though i did have a problem, it was rectified due to the fact that i could go to the owner and get him to deal with it directly.

For me, i have no time for the big sheds much these days. I want to deal with someone who can solve any problem that might arise - not have it passed pillar to post and then disregarded

We bought our sofa from https://www.sofa.com - highly recommended. From start to finish everything went perfectly and we have the L shaped sofa I'd been searching for. Definitely worth paying a little extra for.

It's a minefield for every person who says x lchain is wonderful there is a person I've met who says they are awful.

My furniture is from Next, Debenhams, Dwell(who went out of business last week) and smaller retailers and I've not had a problem with it.

There as one of my siblings gets all his sofas from a local retailer and is happy with it.

Both of us have narrow doors ,due to the age of our properties, but with the local retailer when the sofas he ordered once didn't fit they took them back and he exchanged them for another one. The redelivery was free. In my case if the sofas didn't fit I would have had to pay for them to restock them and for redelivery.

One thing to realise is that if you and other people in your family are quite large or you have children, don't expect the sofas to last.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

We bought from where we did as their sofas are modular so not a problem getting them in to our period property. We've also been able to buy a new cover for the arm after the dog managed to tear a hole in the fabric trying to get a chew out that had gone underneath...

I bought one last year from M&S (30% off if you bought 2 items). Excellent service took away all packaging too.

We bought from Furniture Village and they were great I have to say. Like you I was wary, given terrible reviews online. The sofas are only 15 or so months old but no issues so far.

We had ikea sofas previously and while the regular 3 seater was ok, we also had a 3 seater chaise and that sagged quite badly.
