Do virgin , Ba etc ever have decent sales to USA ?

As above , just wondering if they ever have sales for the likes of San Francisco or LA?

...Just not like they used to.

Like Holiday Pirate on Facebook for up to date deals and error fares.

They do although the biggest savings tend to be in premium cabins.

Well I guess it's easier to take a grand off a £2.5k business class fare to New York than it is to cut £450 Economy fares by a similar percentage.

That's true. There isn't much profit in a £450 fare to start with as it's mostly tax and fuel so there's not much scope for a reduction in a sale.

Both Virgin and BA do have regular sales but, for obvious reasons, they don't tell you when they are going to be in advance. The best way to keep informed is to sign up for their Frequent Flyer clubs so that you get emailed when there is a sale on.

Often the best deals to be had are when you combine a flight with a hotel booking. I've had some where the total price was less than the original price for the flight so they are effectively paying you to stop in the hotel. Similarly with car bookings - it can sometimes be cheaper to book a hire car along with the flight even if you don't have any intention of picking the car up.

    From my experience only

For the last 3 years, the seat sale that runs over Christmas / New Year has given me the cheapest prices (by quite some considerable way), for the journeys that I've wanted to take.

Contrary to most posters on here, I go back quite often and recheck what the current prices for my chosen route. For my family of 4 the typical saving is about £1000 over the non-sale price.

Nothing scientific, just going back again and again and having a looksie. Currently, the closet match to my trip is £1272 more than I paid.

    I second that.

www.kayak.co.uk allows you to run comprehensive searches and set up price alerts for a target point you can set - though that is, I believe, for flights only.

& unfortunately Kayak doesn't cover all airlines -- but it is still one hell of a useful tool

I wasn't aware of that. Which ones does it not include?

It didn't pick up on Air Transat fro a recent search that I was doing, Manchester to Canada ! There may be others as well -- but it is a powerful tool
