Help - New fridge/freezer has died - from Currys

As above

Came home tonight to it being REDHOT and making a machine gun like noise sounds like the internal fans for the fridge and freezer have collapsed and are rattling about.

Did our monthly shop yesterday aswell.

Popped down to our local Currys where i bought it from.

Date of purchase - March 27th 2013
Delivered April 11th 2013

The women was so rude just shrugged her shoulders and said

1 - I cannot do anything to help
2 - We cannot offer you an exchange as its over 28 days
3 - Its not really "my" problem about your food
4 - For a repair it would be a minimum of 4 weeks

Call this number they are open until 8pm 0800 587 8787

They were open till 6:30 and closed when i called.

I was very polite and calm but she was just ignorant and rude I was seconds away from telling her to !!!! off but obviously that never works. I asked for a manager and she said she was the highest up person their..... Brilliant

Where do I stand.. She also advised they DO NOT cover any food loss as its not their problem.

I said that I would purchase a £500 fridge/freezer if over a month down the line it was going to break and potentially catch fire, it was red hot....

Where do I stand?

They aren't responsible for your food. If you have contents insurance it often covers the loss of freezer contents however with the excess and the potential increase in premium next year unless you have expensive meat in the freezer there is no point in claiming.

However you have rights under The Sale of Goods Act.

Firstly what make and model is the fridge/freezer? I would post it on here as there may be a particular type of fault, or one that becomes apparent later with the make and model.

Secondly you are only entitled to a repair or replacement. This is because you have accepted the goods. However as it's summer and they are going to take 4 weeks to find you a replacement phone up at work and kick up a stink. Often different people are on the phones during the day and they are nicer. (I would get them to agree to give you a different model and you pay the difference.)

Edited to say: Did you get the woman's name? If so, put a complaint into head office in writing about her manner however deal with that separately from getting your fridge/freezer replaced.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)

Lesson learned NEVER buy anything from Curry's, non existent cutomer service. John Lewis every time 1st class customer service.

for sure JL are better but they are not always cheapest and just think how many fridges have you had which have died on you! i hope its not too many.....

Some fridge/freezers keep contents safe for x amount of hours after power loss (which may be similar to your situation depending on fault!). check your manual...

Complete BS. IT all depends on the individual serving you at the time. I have had good and bad experiences at the same store but with different people. If you find you are not getting your own way, then return on a busy day, and ask to speak to a manager and make sure your "voice travels", without shouting usually gets the job done, and done give in!

It's surely open and shut - it's not fit for purpose. Complain about the assistant (appalling service) and do a separate one about faulty goods.

Edited to add that their website prommises a prompt repair service or exchange for faulty goods under guarantee and over 21 days old. I cannot believe that by any stretch of the imagination that any one could describe 4 weeks as 'prompt' service.

I have to agree its down to the individual serving you. Could be the best company in the world but if there's a right so and so giving you bad service it can bring the reputation of that company down a few pegs from your perspective. I believe in Karma so if I were you I'd get that shop assistant's name and let the company know about your conversation. At the end of the day they'll appreciate the feedback unless if Currys are that arrogant.

Unless its their own brand, i doubt if they will repair any other brands freezer.

OP number you have given is for currys care plan number. did you take our their care policies. If its a branded fridge/freezer and as its under 12 months old, have you actually called the manufacturer!

I agree with the above post - you may find the manufacturer is faster to respond than Currys. Just explain to them that Currys aren't being very helpful.
If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button! ;)

My experience with JL must differ from yours. I have used Curry's, Dixons, Comet many years ago & found them very difficult to deal with after they have taken my money.

Whereas I have been purchasing various goods from JL for about 15rs & have to say have found all of their staff to be pleasant & helpful both instore & on the telephone.

I have also took back faulty goods to JL & had no problems with returns or refunds.
