you've inspired me to try this - i reckon i should be saving £300 a month instead of the £150 i currently am. yes, some will have to go on the big things - car insurance, tax etc when it comes up, but i'll put a small amount into a separate account for this purpose. i'll let you know how i get on.

this month have slipped into bad old habits of just seeing something and buying it - now have not much at all left til payday - but i'm going to make it stretch now!

when everyone got paid cash, you just HAD to manage, nobody had any to lend you unless you were lucky, nobody had cards or a bank account to fall back on so heres some tips

if your coal runs out burn old shoes

if your hungry, lots of porridge

tell everyone in work your on a de tox and not having lunch

if work is within an hours walking distance and youve no bus fare or petrol money tell them your training for the london marathon when you arrive teeming in sweat.

if your shoes get holes in put some cardboard inside to save your feet touching the pavement old lino is better but you may have ripped that up and burned it once the old shoes went.

if your electricity runs out lot of candles and you can say your being romantic or energy consc

if your gas runs out shout Pesky gas board digging up another pipe.

if the slot telly runs out and you have no more 5 pences

tell stories to each other ghost ones are best

    ;D

There's another bonus here, discovered during a power cut a few months ago. We lit about 100 tea lights, which gave enough light for us to read. After half an hour we had to open the window - the room was maftin!

worked out average weekly spend on everyday things......groceries, milk, papers, (ashamed to admit it) cigarettes, eating out etc........basically everything except clothes and bills.  Instead of withdrawing cash on demand, writing cheques and using switch and credit cards (lets face it, it doesn't really feel quite the same as handing over hard earned bank-notes), we withdrew this amount from (joint) bank account and used as house-keeping money.

pink-winged, just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration of this post....

i have now had my first week of living on cash, and have managed - quite amazed as i was away last weekend and even managed to get a couple of things at ikea with the money! :D

i've also worked out what to save and have set up ING accounts for car, holidays, treats, christmas prezzies and also an ISA for longer term saving.

i've also changed my current account to smile - has anyone else used them - they pay 3% interest, and are ethical, and i already banked with co-op and did all my banking online so i think they'll be the same to deal with - v good in my experience.

thanks again to you and all the others on here :) Rach
