Bannatynes gym 3 month notice

Something people may find useful regarding bannatynes gym 3 month notice period.
Let me start by saying I was a bannatynes member for 9 years no problems no complaints.
Time moves on and I needed a change of scenery so I informed local gym I needed to cancel, was informed that 3 months notice was due.
I thought that was a lot so asked them to confirm which they did by showing me a copy of my contract. I had also checked whilst awaiting a reply and after a little digging I found a copy of a written undertaking from the financial director of bannatynes to the OFT dated feb 2013 that stated amongst other things notice periods in excess of one month were considered unfair and as a company bannatynes would no longer be looking to enforce them.
I informed the local branch of this and my next contact was from the head office stating that contract terms were clearly stated and 3 months notice was required, however in light of communications received they would as a one off gesture of goodwill knock 20% off my two remaining payments, very generous but didn't seem quite right.
A telephone call to head office resulted in membership cancelled with one months notice, already paid, when I pushed for a response to this undertaking to the OFT.
This was never about not paying what was due but in light of the press coverage regarding gym contacts I just wanted to make sure that everything was being done right.
As for the way bannatynes handled this you make up your own minds

Thanks for the advice. Given the terrible state of the Bannatynes gym in Manchester I am about to cancel my membership. A colleague informed me of the 3 month rule but I will take your advice on this one. Can anyone recommend an alternative gym in central Manchester?I don't like getting old, but its better than the alternative!0
