2 policies on 1 car

Is it possible to take out a policy on your name on a friends/family members car with their approval off-course whilst they already have cover (on their name) for the given car?

Is it possible to have 2 different policies held by different people on the same car?

Believe it or not, it's actually a criminal offence.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?

Depends on the circumstances. Are you a learner, Or is it a short term policy? There are policies like that.

But for a full year, Why not add you to their policy?

There maybe issues about liability with some claims or incidents.

I'll not believe it as it's not a criminal offence

    Any statutes for reference?

It's not illegal, but you need to ensure that insurable interest is met and the other insurer knows you don't own the vehicle.

It's not. I have a top-up policy on my car, on top of my business use, as it's not a taxi, but needs public liability. It was cheaper than putting a plate on it, having to have an MoT each year etc.

You will need to tell the second insurer the full details, however, and possibly the first, too!

If I did that, I'd be tempted to use the same company

It is possible but isnt liked by insurers because of the RTA insurer issues and due to the issue of who deals with theft claims etc

In these circs you have four options:

    1) Add you to their policy as either a Temporary Additional Driver or a Named Driver (depending on how long you need access)

    2) Add their vehicle to your policy as a Temporary Additional Vehicle

    3) Drive it under the Driving Other Cars extension of your own policy (assuming you have it) and accept that you have Third Party Only cover (ie no cover for damage to your friends/ family car)

    4) Buy an insurance policy on the vehicle, again temporary or annual depending on your needs

There are temp policies exactly for this purpose which avoids the normal pain of dual insurance.

    Complete rubbish.

If you think it is, please quote the section and Act of Parliament that makes it offence.
    Hint: You can't

It is perfectly possible for two people to have a separate insurance policy on the same car.

For example two lodgers may agree to buy a car jointly.
Both have a legitimate insurable interest and a need for legally required insurance cover.
Each could buy an insurance policy which covers them to drive but not the other. This is perfectly legal.
The only time this could cause any problems is if it was stole whilst parked, in which case the two insurance companies would probably try to argue that the other should pay up, but ultimately the claim would be paid, the only argument is which proportion by which insurer.

    A word of advice, though:
If there is more than one policy on a car, the police database can only hold full details of one policy at a time. There will be a flag to indicate that another policy exists, but no details of it. So always keep a copy of both certificates in the car in case you're stopped by the police.
