D-Link for network?

I'm looking at upgrading to Fibre Optic broadband with Sky. The issue is that the box is at the front of the house and the main computer is at the back and upstairs. We have a second box underneath that room but it's not stable currently for normal broadband, dropping speed and the like, and as I understand it, that box will not be upgraded to fibre, and if it was it'd be losing speed anyway by not being the main box.

So my friend has suggested these plug like things that somehow let your net work using your electrcitiy network? Do these things work? If so how complicated are they and would I still be looking at getting close to full speed using this and a plug near the front of the house to send it upstairs to my PC?

Thanks for reading.
