Panasonic breadmaker help

I have had my bread maker for a couple of months and am really disappointed with the results. My loaves only rise a little and the paddle stays in the loaf when It comes out. Any suggestions. Thanks.

  • Hi,

We had a similar issue and for us it was the yeast. Even though the sachets had 6 months left on the bbf date I reluctantly chucked them and bought a new box and hey presto lovely loaves again :j

In the Panasonic booklet under troubleshooting it says if the blade stays in the dough is too stiff. They suggest adding and extra 10-20ml water next time and/or making sure there is no crust build up underneath the kneading blade.

    Hth :)

  • Just had another thought. I always use one spoon to add sugar and then salt and then use a fresh spoon for the yeast. I think salt can effectively kill the yeast.

The extra water trick definitely helps for the blade staying in. Different flours absorb water differently so one bag might need 20ml extra water and the next might be OK with a bit less than the recipe calls for. I generally weigh the water and add what the recipe says but at the moment I'm adding a fair bit more.

I haven't had the rising problem but I've heard a few people have had problems with their yeast. I use the Allinson in the green tin and touch wood it has always been OK for me.

Thanks for the replies - I will pop and get some new yeast and see if that makes any difference, and add a "little" more water.

Maybe try a couple of the pre-mix breads? I know it's not as MSE as doing it yourself from scratch, but it will help to prove if there is a problem with the machine (although I would tend to agree it's probably your yeast)

I use the Allinson yellow tin yeast - I know it says not for breadmakers but I didn't see that when I bought it the first time and my bread always rises nicely. LOL!

It's probably the dough is too dry making the paddle stick, as others have already said.

thriftyscrumpers: Salt does affect yeast working. My panasonic booklet says to put the yeast in first, then the flour followed by the sugar and salt so the salt would never come into direct contact with the yeast on the spoon. :)

this is great , please try it . i have pannasonic breadmaker too, i bake this every other day it is really really good
1 cup water 250 plus extra 1 tablespoon water if using brown flour
    1 tablespoon sugar
    1 teaspoons of salt
400gs of bread flour or 150 brown 250 white makes nice loaf
    1 teaspoons of yeast
    4 tablespoon oil
I put ingredients in as ive listed them ,this seperates yeast and salt
Use wholemeal setting on machine even if making white bread
Also for some reason i always get a better loaf if i put it on overnight to finish as i get up , lidl or carrs bread flour has worked best

I agree with the above and always had a problem with Morrisons yeast. Now I buy just two satchets at a time from Lidl (Allinsons Yeast)
Just had another thought. I always use one spoon to add sugar and then salt and then use a fresh spoon for the yeast. I think salt can effectively kill the yeast.

As per the Panasonic advice - I always make sure the yeast goes in first, then the flour in order to maintain the separation from the salt (which does indeed kill the yeast)

  • pzh and this year thanks re yeast. My Panasonic has a compartment for yeast in the top of the lift up lid, so I have to add yeast to that last, otherwise risk it going everywhere when I lift lid to add loaf tin.

Ok - I see now. I think the newer models have this "Yeast Dispenser".

With my aging machine, I just sling everything in the "tin", select the correct program and press start. The only time I use the dispenser is when I use a recipe that adds raisins or nuts, etc.
