They might have a partner who works in retail who are not allowed to take Christmas and Easter off. That doesn't give them any time to take a 2 week holiday.

If you want to go somewhere long haul I'd say yes. Even if closer to home depending on mode of transport, I'd say quite possibly depending on where you are going to and where you live as it could involve overnight stays en-route in both directions. I personally, wouldn't fancy 11+ years of never being allowed to take a consecutive fortnight off to holiday with child/ren.

Overnight stays on one week holidays are perfectly easy to do - you leave on Friday and come back on Sunday.

As far as long haul holidays go, it comes back to what I said earlier, if you can afford a term time long haul holiday you can afford an August short haul holiday so no reason not to be able to go for a fortnight.

I apologise if you're in this situation but are there really that many families where one partner can't take any time off in the summer and the other can't take any off at Christmas and Easter? I'm sure there'll be some but I really don't think that it'll be that common.

My eldest daughter who is 8 was authorised to go as she as been showing signs of upset at school. My other daughter who is 6 was not authorised as they said that it wasnt affecting her. My 3 others are not oficially at compulsory school age so although the holidays wasnt authorised they cannot give a penalty. We will however be given a penalty for the 6 year old. Which will be £100, £50 for their dad and £50 for me. I am actually their step mum and oficially have no legal right over the children, I cannot authorise school trips or authorise an emergency operation if needed, however the Education Welfare officer is still going to fine me because I went on holiday with them.

Do you have PR for the children? I don't think my children's school fine, so I don't know the rules.

Authorising one child for exceptional circumstances but not the other is bonkers - you're a family! If the family needs a break, that should include the child who seems to be coping okay - being left out of a family holiday wouldn't do much for her happiness.

I just booked ours for 30th September for 4 nights and he came home with that letter in his bag the following Monday. I don't think our school will fine, the Secretary just said he can still go, it'll just be marked as unauthorised.

Our holiday is £700 in the holidays and £132 in term time, that's the difference been going and not going, we already only go as mum and boy, otherwise it's to expensive for us all to go plus boarding the dogs somewhere. Hard without a car, have to go everywhere in trains and buses and with both our Labradaughters and their crate as well as our luggage, it's virtually impossible.

Hope it's not a big problem, I really object to him being marked absent when he's got speech therapy, physio or a consultants hospital appointment, they're not allowed to do that to me at work, under the disability discrimination act, but the school can say he was off 5 days when it was all medical.

I'm afraid that I really would question the wisdom of taking a child out of school (even for only 4 days) when he's already missing a lot of time for medical appointments.
