Judging if you can get a sofa into a flat?

Hi

I am moving into a new flat and need to get a sofa. The doorway for the flat is 70cm wide. I have been looking at a sofa with the dimensions below.

Dimensions in cm: (H)85, (W)185, (D)89.
Width of seat between arms: 135cm.
Floor to seat height: 44cm.
Width of seat: 135cm.
Depth of seat: 53cm.
Seat back height: 53cm.

Is it a simple case that this wont fit because the height and depth are too big or does anyone think I could manoeuvre it in? if so, is there a golden rule for figuring out if sofa / units etc will fit through doors, stairwells etc

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers

I recently had one delivered and relied in the fact that the seat back has a flexible top section. So the sofa was squeezed through by compressing the 80 cm height down to go through 70 cm wide doorways. Manufacturers are aware that the standard UK internal doorways are 70 cm and build accordingly. Have a closer look at the sofa and remember the feet are usually added after delivery.

thanks. Unfortunately the back seems rigid and the feet are already attached. I will check again though

185cm is less than a standard door height. Is there room to put it on end?

Whichever way, the smallest dim of the sofa must be narrower than the doorway width. Most sofas are longer than doorways are high and sofas have to be tilted through.

I had this problem as well, my door was 25 inches wide, and on the second floor.

Best advice I was given was to buy a sofa with reclining seats, because they're delivered in pieces...no problem at all getting it upstairs.

But if you've already chosen the sofa, can't help!

  • I recently took a gamble on getting a 3 seat settee into my apartment.
The thing to watch out for is not the width but the height of the unit if you have to get it vertical to go through a doorway. The door may be 6' 3" and the sofa may be 6' wide but if you have to get it vertical outside of your door..................the diagonal measurement is what counts.

Mine did go eventually, but we had to remove tiles from the false ceiling to get it upright.....................phew !

To "fiddle" a couple of extra inches in the door-way, you can take the door off its hinges until you get the sofa in.

We had to do this after buying a 4 seat antique leather chesterfield the size of a small bus.

It took 2 hours and 3 chaps from the pub! :D
