O2 contract 'upgrade' and then 30 days notice to cancel on the same day?

I am coming to the end of my 24 month iPhone contract and am eligible for a 3 month early 'upgrade' on the 18th July. I am finding that O2 are very expensive these days so I have decided to leave O2 and get a Virgin £12 sim only contract and keep my old phone.
To leave O2 at the end of my contract I would have to wait another 3 months. So my plan is to 'upgrade' to their cheapest sim only 30 day contract (£11) and then once that's set up, the same day give my 30 days notice to leave, so I only pay £11.
I'd have to take out the Virgin sim only contract at the same time as the 100 minutes you get with the O2 sim only contract would not be enough.
Will this work, or am I missing something? I'm paying about £40+ per month for the contract so just want the cheapest and fastest way to get rid of it. Thanks

From the O2 site:To use your early upgrade benefit of 3 or 6 months you must be moving to a tariff of the same price or higher, if not you’ll have to wait until the last month of your contract to upgrade.
So I would guess the answer to your question is that you can't. I suppose the definitive answer will come on 18th July when you can log in to your account and see if it will let you.0 -
you cant usually early upgrade to a 30day sim, you will have to wait until the end of the contract before moving
or you could pay the early termination fee to cancel the existing contract0 -

Not true, we 'upgraded' two iPhone contracts last month from £47 a month to £20 a month simplicity deals.
But you can only do it in the last month of the contract.0 -
That is what I originally thought. But they told me on O2 customer service chat that you can upgrade to any account. Maybe they thought this was at the end of my contract and not early. Will have to wait and see.0

But isn't that just for a standard 'last month' upgrade?I want to upgrade my Pay Monthly mobile

You can choose from our full range of handsets. Or, if you're happy with your current handset, you could go onto one of our simplicity tariffs or you can get a credit added to your bill for resigning to a contract without a new phone.

When can I use my early upgrade benefit?
From 30 March 2012 our core pay monthly tariffs include an early upgrade benefit of 1, 3 or 6 months. You can use this early upgrade benefit to get a new handset quicker than before. To use your early upgrade benefit of 3 or 6 months you must be moving to a tariff of the same price or higher, if not you’ll have to wait until the last month of your contract to upgrade.

Yes, I just deleted my last post when I realised it was wrong. Looks my clever plan wasn't so clever. You win O2....this time.0
