New house, alarm goes off when power turned off

I have a new (to me) house that has an Accenta alarm installed. I have the day to day code to get the alarm on and off when I enter/leave the property, but whilst working on the electrics today we needed to turn the power off which unsurprisingly sent the alarm blaring away.
Do I need an engineer code or something different so that I can turn it off so we can turn the power off?
Thanks!

Wont be new battery, the alarm would have no power to sound if the battery was dead and the current no longer available,

The alarm needs to ne on a separate circuit, i'd have an engineer check it, as it may be mains wired, and thus when the mains power is cut it switches to the battery to sound, much the same with a fault on a fire alarm system.

Most alarms don't sound on a power cut as its not unusual.

If the battery in the panel is dead, the battery in the external box sounds the alarm.

So this will give you some clues, if only the outside alarm was sounding then it could well be the battery in the control panel

My alarm sounds silently to the control centre if power cut. It doesn't ring in the house.
I didn't know that till I got a text from my no.2 contact to check whether I was OK. My mobile had packed up as the signal tower was down too. Lucky the text got through.
I then had to enter an engineer code to re-set.

    Thanks for all the suggestions.
I did try to get in to the control panel to have a look, which set the alarm code panel bleeping away at top volume, but not the outdoor siren. But I can't get properly in the control panel because it's situated in the airing cupboard and the hot water tank is sat virtually on top of it! That might be a reason why no one has been able to change the battery in the control panel box, because you can't access it!?

You need to know the engineering code so that you can put the system into maintenance mode. The problem will be a dead battery in the control panel. When the battery is dead, cutting the mains input sounds the alarm in the external box which has it's own battery .

you only need the eng code to make changes to the settings.
The factory engineer's code is 9999 which might work if its not been changed.

When you open the control panel the tamper will sound the the alarm, enter your user code and it should silent the alarm. You can then check the battery and change if needed. Close control panel cover, input user code to reset tamper.

Beware there's 240v ac in the control panel, so only open it if your not stupid.

Having the alarm panel in an airing cupboard with a hot water tank isn't the best place to site it! The heat won't do much good to the electronics and it will almost certainly shorten the life of the backup-battery.

If you have a G3 series panel, this guide may help you:

    Thanks everyone for the replies.
It does sound like I need a new Control panel battery for it then, but can't get the door open due to the hot water tank.
I'll have a read of that manual and see if there's any way of getting the whole door off rather than opening it from the hinge . . ?

One way or another you need to open it. How far can you open it?
You will only need to open it enough to slide the battery out.
Is there lagging on the tank you can remove a little to open the door enough?
