in Zone 6, i was paying £600/month for a tiny studio. It didn't have a seperate kitchen either.

U'll be lucky to get anything for £500.
your only chance would be to look at the really cheap areas, which you seem to be ruling out already.

also, why does it have to be less than Zone 3, whats wrong with going further out ?

Zone 3 is usually more expensive to rent. You can go out to Zone 6 and still get into central London in 20 mins on fast train or tube.

Coulsdon, Purley, East Croydon all have direct fast trains to Victoria or London Bridge as does north of London where the tubes run from Southgate to the City in 20 mins. Palmers Green, Oakwood, there's a long list of places in Zone 6 with fast speed trains or tube into central London or the City in 20 mins

    1) every how many minutes do these trains depart?
    2) about the fares? is it financially sustainable to commute every day to central london from there?

Lots of people commute from Zone 6

You could also cycle if you want to save money

They have trains all day and night but in the rush hour I think they go about every 5 minutes average? Thousands of people do the commute so it must be financially sustainable. Travelling into central London from zone 6 probably costs about £15 a week more than it would travelling in from zone 3 or even 2 but you're guaranteed a seat and it's only an extra 8 minutes journey approx? In fact door to door could be quicker depending on how long it takes you to reach the station.

I just come from some "agents" where I enquired about rooms and studios

it got on my nerves seeing their expensive furniture and macbooks, because I realise that their luxurious offices are a reason for the prices being so high

they made good effort to convince me that I will never find that budget deal I am looking for

however, I still believe that what we see on the well known real estate websites, are the properties that passed through without creating an attraction to all those people sitting in the waiting list of these agencies

so, a good deal, will probably never make it to be published on the internet, it will be already taken few seconds (and few phone calls) after it arrived at the agent's office
  • To be honest, if you can find anywhere for 500pcm all inclusive in Zone 3, I'm pretty sure it will be a "horrible" place to live. London is expensive.

Where do you need to commute to? I'm assuming it's somewhere in zone 1, but is it close enough to a zone 2 station that you could get off there and then walk or cycle the rest of the way? Dropping zone 1 from your travelcard is the quickest way to cut commuting costs. Zones 1-3 is £136.80 per month. Zones 2-6 is £146.00.

As others have said, there are many zone 6 areas which still have quick commutes. Look along the train lines as well as tube lines that lead in to where you need to commute to. You can use Oyster at all train stations out to zone 6, so the cost is the same whether you use tube or train.
