You do not have to be 'disabled' to be issued with Chip & Signature Cards.

I'm fortunate enough at this time to be 'abled bodeid' and all my cards which carry an EMV (Europay, MasterCard or Visa) logo are Chip and Signature.

Acquiring Chip & Signature is all about talking or preferably writing to the correct person. If you call talk to customers service

If you feel unsafe using PINs and there's reson to be, then TELL your card issuer you need Chip & Signature.

Tell card issuers you have diffuclty remembering seldom used numbers and you are already using a 4 digit number for something else. You are complying with Card Watch Advice (Don’t use the same PIN for every card), and, in the interest of security, refuse to use the same number for other applications or cards.

Members of the public are starting to wake up and realise that it's foolish to use a PIN with your credit card.

    Reasons are:

    Liablity shift to the cardholder.

    Pesonal safety.

Terms & Conditions compliance, i.e. keep your PIN secret and if you think someome knows your PIN, tell us right away. How can you? The industry themselves can't explain how crooks are harvesting PINs by the thousands and when PINs are compromised they're not letting you know.

It's all about talking to the right person, telling them the sort of card YOU require and not accepting the type of card they think YOU can manage.

    Good luck.

As a sales assistant (part time) I would like to see chip and pin AND signature on sales over say £100.
The whole pin things lead to loads of problems of people using partners/husbands/wives/stolen cards. Occasionally our till system reverts to signature and that catches these people out.

Best of all was the RBS Switch cards that used to have the photo on the back in addition the signature. Now that was proper security and it didn't take any time to check.

Chip & Signature is even less secure than Chip & Pin, you'd have to be bonkers to want one.

Please don't believe all the nonsense James trots out, he's on a mission for some reason.

I think the most important point James is making is the shift of responsibility for fraud from issuer to cardholder, and on that point alone I favour chip and sig.

I worled for a high street bank when chip and pin was first introduced and the instructions we were given for both debit and credit cards were as follows: So long as you don't keep your pin number written down, the liability for fraud lies with the card issuer.

The shift of responsibility when chip and pin was introduced is, for some reason, misunderstood by a lot of people. Back in the days of signature, the responsibility lay with the vendor to check the customer's signature matched the signature on the card, so any fraud that took place (with the exception of at ATMs) was the responsibility of the vendor. When chip and pin began that responsibility was shifted to the card issuer, as security is now their responsibility.

The only responsibility the customer has is not to have their pin written down anywhere. And I mean anywhere. The fraudsters very quickly cottoned on to the idea of people writing their pin in "code". The instructions from your CC or DC issuer should tell you to memorise the pin you receive from them and immediately destroy it. You can change it to a different pin but don't use anything easily guessable - no DOB, no sequential numbers etc. This is the reason why card issuers are obliged to issue a chip & sig card to anyone who requests it - they can't prove you have difficulty or an inability to remember random numbers. Ask nicely if you want one, but remember if your card is stolen chip & sig is not at all secure - experienced crooks can learn to copy a signature good enough to pass inspection in around 5 minutes, so time is of the essence - how much could they have spent by the time you notice your card's gone? Problem is, even with chip & sig cards fraud responsibility still lies with the card issuer, which is why they don't like chip & sig!

Hope that makes sense. personally I'm quite satisfied with chip & pin, but I have no probs remembering numbers and all my cards have different randomly generatd pins. The choice of what type of card is really up to you and your card issuer to agree on.

Excellent posting, thank you kittykitten. Your last sentence says it all:

    Just one small point.

If you loose your Chip & Signature card, look at the options a crooks has.

They can't use the card to get CASH - no PIN.

They have to face down retail staff, forge you signature and probably leave evidence by way of prints or CCTV footage.

However if they target you specifically for your PIN and PINCH your cards, they can use your card without the fear of being caught at ATMs or in shops without ever being challenged.

It is personal choice, what's best for you, for me it's Chip & Signature for Tootise Roll Chip & PIN.

I have no problem with Tootsie Rolls choice although I respect, but don't agree with Tootise Rolls views.

Just to let you know that not all credit cards have a chip and signature facility. Most do but not all.

And as I have pointed out to you numerous times most ATM's are now all chip read only so as it is impossible to clone the chip they can't get cash out anyway. All of the fraud that you so dilligently report on here is done via the mag strip and pin - not the chip. It is significantly easier to forge someone's signature than it is to guess their pin.

Stick with chip & pin folks - far safer.
