How can I diagnose connectivity issues?

Help!

I have wireless internet from Orange. It has never been that reliable but for the last 24 hrs the connection has been dropping every 2 minutes  . Crashed 3 times while writing this..........

Have had enough! But don't know what to do to find out what problem is. Phoned their technical support who wanted to change my channel - but as soon as I submit it the link crashes and I can't connect up wth landline to keep stable connection while I do it.

I am tempted by the Tiscali package £19.99 including line rental & calls) but need to know if my modem router (is that right???? is a Livebox) and/or my USB adaptor (Belkin) are working! Is there an easy way of testing this?

Please help or the PC is out the window

You should log-in to your Livebox while connected using the Ethernet cable to change the wireless channel. Your Livebox is useless for Tiscali (locked) who are best avoided anyway, as the most complained about ISP in the country! Ideally you need to find out what channel others are using nearby and change your wireless channel to be as far away as you can.

Orange to Tiscali...pan in to the fire.

Do a bit of research on BB sites such as ThinkBroadband before changing ISP.

Tiscali gets more complaints from customers than even Orange do.

I agree with espresso, if your wifi s/n ratio is rubbish, maybe you are not doing something properly.
First, you need to know whether the problem is between ISP and modem, or between modem and your device. In the last case, how far is your device from the access point anyway? Maybe try to get closer?
If that's not it, I'd follow espresso's advice, audit the networks, and see if someone else isn't creating noise. Remember that only channels 1,6,11 do not overlap (or more accurately, not by much), and thus do not interfere with each other.
  • Thanks for advice, Tiscali sacked!!!!

Am now connected by wire....... and it is not v good......

second try..... crashed on first attempt at reply

Have been told by Orange, now I have managed to get wired connection, that the problem is with the wireless card in my PC. I didn't know I had one of those..... . Would Dell be able to help me???? Or does she mean my Belkin Adaptor which plugs into USB port???

The Belkin adaptor. You know which device you use to connect don't you? We can't tell you. If you don't know, try to connect wirelessly w/o the Belkin USB dongle: if you can't, that's your NIC, if you can, you are actually using another one to connect.
Again, it's most probably a configuration issue rather than a hardware one.
And again, if you are far from the access point, or below it, or behind thick walls, then that's a problem as well.

    Cricri stop confusing me!!!!

I knew I used a Belkin, but wasn't sure if there was something else inside the PC. Can't connect wirelessly with or without Belkin so am assuming Belkin has bit the dust (DS has just informed me that there isn't anything inside PC, so Belkin it must be.)

Am buying a new adaptor at lunch time - I understand D-Link are OK? Or should I go for Netgear?

Everything went t*ts up and no 'click through' pages would load so phone again and have been reconfigured. Hope new adaptor doesn't through it t*ts up again.......

Why are you buying a new adaptor if it's not very good when connected via the Ethernet cable as per post #5?

Espresso, I'm buying a new adaptor as at the mo the Ethernet cable is giving me wired connection only. When the wireless was working ( ) it was faster and I could move around without tripping over wires.......

Thanks for all your advice. This is all my own fault for letting son take over all technical issues so I haven't updated my knowledge in last 5 yrs. My 1st internet connection involved a pigeon & a long bit of wire.........:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
