I hope not. OP - you are student and don't pay taxes, but when you do- p1ss taking stories like this will make your blood boil

Send her home, there is nothing for her here!!

I agree! I came to this country 40 years ago, have been made redundant twice but have never claimed a penny. I have done all possible jobs and taken roles with a lower salary than before! Tell her to either find a job or go home. Why should she get a penny when she hasn't made any contributions at all?

So, your g/f comes over here and your first question is "what can she get from the state". Not "what job can she do that will enable her to live here without being a burden to the rest of us". I give up!
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

I am not sure she can be looking very hard, I just put in Edinburgh on the job centre plus site or whatever it called nowadays and there are 4554 jobs. ok she may not be qualified for some of them etc etc but surely there must be a couple she/you could get.
Play nice  Just because I am paranoid doesn't mean they are not out to get me.:j

If the OP hasn't been frightened off, he might want to look at this - http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/wales/benefits_w/faq_index_benefits/faq_benefits_entitlement_if_coming_from_abroad.htm.

However Switzerland isn't part of the EU or EEA. Has your girlfriend any way of proving her Dutch nationality?

Isn't this board meant to be for advice rather than judgement? The OP only asked a question.

Swiss citizens have the same conditional entitlement to JSA as EEA nationals.

Barbara, surely you know this board by now?

I don't think France allows people to claim any welfare unless they have paid into their system?

French rules on eligibility for unemployment benefits (JSA equivalent) for EU citizens are broadly similar to ours.

For those who like to pretend otherwise, tax credits, child benefit, state pensions, winter fuel allownce and free transport passes are welfare payments.

And what has all that to do with the OP?

I assumed from this that the girlfriend has tried to find work but hasn't been successful so far. I agree, there must be tons of bar/cafe/hotel jobs in a city that size. Quite low paid and maybe some unsociable hours, but fine for someone with no dependents.

    Cafes, hotels, minicab office controllers

There are jobs there, that need to be sought.

OP, I had my children when I was studying, however I was working my backside off to pay for them, as was OH. We had less than you each week after rent/bills/petrol (I was driving in a cab office for about £25 a shift profit, and OH was controlling at £20 a shift, with us working alternate shifts)

I know that this was Russia, but if you want spending money, you've got to work for it, and that means both of you.

Thanks for that. OP's girlfriends needs to get herself down the jobcentre as soon as possible. She needs to do this anyway to get a National Insurance number.
