When we put the key in the door the only thing in the bungalow was a old fridge we opened it and found the owner had left us a bottle of champagne and a note saying do enjoy this drink on me......That was so nice of him , bless him ..........
  • That was a nice finishing touch of him, how many people actually drink champagne though?

We're renting. Our current house gets a slug infestation every winter, due to warped wood around doors and walls that leaves gaps for their access. We've taken to scattering salt all over the kitchen each winter.

In the summer, we get wasps instead.

Erm filth and muck. Looked like they hadn't cleaned since they accepted my offer 3 months previously.

A bottle of champagne would have been lovely with a note detailing little helpful things about the place/bin collections etc.

That's what I'll be doing when I sell.

We got a bunch of flowers and a card to say the vendors hope we enjoy living here etc etc.

    Nice touch.

Won't be leaving any this time ourselves, our buyers have messed us around too much.

When I bought my first house, I found the vendors still there. They invited me in for a cup of tea then cried about not wanting to leave. It wasn't even their home, it had been their late brother's. I was so young, and so gobsmacked, that I just left and got someone from work to come back with me later to check they'd gone.

Then I immediately changed all the locks. :rotfl:

We rent, and in our current house we moved in to find it filthy and an enormous debt on the electricity key meter that took us weeks to sort out. It hadn't been helped by the fact that the landlord hadn't bothered informing the electricity company that he'd bought the house and had made the debt even worse during his 'renovations'. We also found a huge pile of post, including a whole load of catalogues for DVDs of the seedier kind. For the first few months, we also got almost daily hassle from bailiffs and debt collectors (both legitimate and not) because of the debts run up by the previous owner - in fact we still get the odd one visiting now.

Perhaps the worst thing was that the previous owner of the house also abandoned his cat there. The poor thing had nowhere to go and was obviously starving, so of course I started looking after it thinking it was a local stray, only to be told by the neighbour that she had belonged to the last owner - god knows why this neighbour didn't think to call a shelter when it was obvious that the owner hadn't taken his pet with him. I did ask the letting agency whether 'in theory' we could have a cat only to be told that the landlord would evict us as soon as he could if we got a pet. So I had to get the local shelter to take her away to be rehomed :(

I knew the house I bought, but was still surprised to see what the rooms looked like when empty, and how dirty the walls were around former pictures. You can be so excited on arrival, and then when you look around at reality, it can be a little let-down for a moment or two.
