Like a lot of us, I must have a degree in dieting - been doing it most of my adult life one way or another.

What I do know is that no diet will work unless you have sufficient willpower to stick to whatever method you are using. First thing is not to go telling everone you are on a diet, that immediately puts you in the mindset of being deprived. The will power must come from you in the form of 'I am in contol of Me, Me want's to lose weight, so Me will not eat xxx' . If you think along the lines of 'poor me I can't have...' you are doomed to failure. The brain is the strongest muscle you have, use it wisely!

Doing 5:2 suits me because for two days a week I know I cannot eat anything apart from my one meal, which I keep simple, either a calorie counted ready meal (annoyingly M&S do some lovely ones, but they are not at all OS price-wise) or something on toast like freshly grilled tomatoes or mushrooms - and like Nutty, no butter! Even on non-fat days, I don't have butter on an 'on toast' meal, you dont miss it one bit.

One final thing I to give yourelf time off for things like birthdays and Chritmas - but plan it in advance, tell yourself exactly how long you will be off-plan, and stick to it. This year I did not fast Chriatmas week, and started again on Monday.

So good luck with whatever you are doing, stay strong!

I did the quiz thing asking if you're a carb addict and I scored top marks :D so I cut out all sugary stuff and went to one main meal a day when I eat whatever I want, inc pudding like apple or peach crumble and custard. The only prob I have is that I like porridge and oatcakes and they're carbs. But I went off it at xmas (intentionally) and haven't gained an ounce.

  • I think for me, The idea of a diet means everything is cut out instead of fruit, veg & salad. I’m such a picky eater. Therefore I might be best taking up Lyn’s idea. Also adding exercise is a must.

I’m a huge fan of pasta, cheese, ect. Not great if your eating them and not working it off.
Ideally because we have been trying to conceive for the past 3 years, I should loose around two stone incase we require any fertility treatments.

Plus, I’m already overweight. ( I know it) So I have plenty of reasons why I should loose the pounds.

Something that doesn’t help is the way we shop for food. Because MIL works in Iceland’s, She receives a % off. Which she gives to OH when we need to do a food shop. Generally I have a list written and I try and stick to it, However I hear continuously, But 40 sausages for £2 is cheap.
Sometimes, Training to MS is a nightmare - Because of the discount now he is buying more & more junk foods replacing the healthy eating plan I keep putting in place.

I don’t drink so alcohol isn’t an issue for me, But OH does. He has resulted in making his own because he cant pay the amount wanted for a case of beers. Again this isn’t great because its always available meaning he can have as many as he wants without running out.

I have noticed something recently though. Maybe you could all shed some light on it.

We’re both constantly hungry. I have been told that we could be eating the wrong meals meaning their not as filling. But I could do OH Breakfast, Lunch & dinner and around 8pm he’s hungry like he’s eaten nothing! Maybe I should worm him lol xx
    Future goals:
    Become debt free.
    Beat Depression.
    Be happy & healthy

Oh Mar I would kill for a bit of snow - I cant abide the wind, will put up with rain as its necessary but I really feel I need a little of the fluffy white stuff :)

We wandered out this morning to get boys and OH hair cut - OH usual place was closed, so we tried the boys barber next - the whole market was closed. Am slightly confused how all these places opened straight after Christmas but cant open on a normal none holiday day??
Headed to opticians as DS9 has squished his glasses again, they were all pleased to see him and gave him his usual special treatment and straightened them all out again, then they decided his nose pieces were a little hard so fitted some softer ones for his "delicate" nose!! :)

Finally managed to find a toilet roll holder for downstairs cloakroom, since we had it tiled we havent had one as I am too wussy to risk drilling the tiling - I found a free standing one in B&M this morning reduced to £5 so grabbed it quick :)

DS9 has managed to break his memory card inside his tablet - we had bought a super duper can withstand 24 hours submerged, xrays extreme temps etc - well it cant withstand DS. Thankfully its guaranteed to withstand the harshest treatment so they are replacing it, trouble is he will have lost all his photos etc.

Last day of OH being off today (did I really shout hallelujah?? ) so trying to get all the big stuff done today.

Princess - it may be that you are both eating a lot of refined carbs - most convenience foods are full of them (wonder why 40 sausages can cost £2?) Too many carbs raises your blood sugar, so the body releases insulin to counteract it. Then your blood sugar dips and you feel hungry again - this see-sawing blood sugar is not good at all. Mot office workers will recognise the post-lunch sandwich slump!

Simple rule - don't eat white food (apart from cauliflower), white means highly refined, so the carbs are too readily available to the body. Things like jacket spuds are really bad, the stach turns very easily to sugar. pasta should be wholemeal if possible, but I think it better not to have meals based on bulky carbs, better to have lots of veg.

You need to ensure you eat a of uinrefined carbs balanced with sufficient protein and fat. So, lots of vegetables, lentils, whole grains good protein and some fat.

This does not need to cost too much, careful planning and a lot can be in your storecupboard. Use you iceland discount to buy good quality chicken and fish, Aldi, Lidl or local markets for fresh fruit and veg. Ethnic stores for whole rice, lentils and spices.

Oh and alcohol will not help blood sugar at all!

Getting your blood sugar on an even keel will make you both feel so much better, and help with getting your body ready for a baby :)

ETA - having said all that, wholemeal bread is not so good either. This is a very interesting, thought provoking video about the scienc of why refined carbs (in this case high fructose corn syrup, used in a lot of processed foods)

  • Hello everyone

I've been going a little stir-crazy lately stuck indoors (I've had a really bad infection in my feeding tube) so I ventured into town today - it was really quiet so I just had a look around the shops at leisure. Came home and found I'd missed two parcels - how typical is that!!! Tomorrow I'll have to go to the sorting office to collect them.

Dieting - I know that many of you are struggling to lose weight at the moment - before I got sick, I always had to watch my weight as I'm only tiny and any weight gain showed straight away. Now it's the complete opposite and I lose weight on a daily basis. I am currently malnourished and the hospital are threatening to admit me again - all they do is double my liquid feed which I can do just as easily at home but I think they know it's the only way I WILL rest and do nothing. I hate just sitting around!!! Anyway, I just wanted to say, please, please DO savour what you eat.....make food something you enjoy rather than struggle with. Nowadays I yearn for the strangest of things - satsumas, toast, tuna.......none of these were "favourites" and yet I long for them now!!!

Fuddle, I thought I was the only one subjected to those awful television programmes!!! We have the whole panning for gold, digging in the mud for long-lost treasure, fishing, cars and also trucking programmes. And the worst often happens - he'll fall asleep halfway through so I end up watching it twice!!!!

And now a small question - I wanted to try some Yankee candles and someone kindly bought me some for Christmas. I have a small glass holder that fits the very small candles (sold as a small candle for about £1.80)..............once I burn a candle, how do I clean out the mess it leaves so I can reuse the holder?? I've only ever used candles on a plate holder until now.

And now I'm off to change beds..........before settling down with one of the new books I got for Christmas.

    Love to all,
    Debbie xx
