Re butter, I have banned all fake fats from the house. In a previous job, I had some dealings with a company that refined vegetable oils for making margarine. Never liked marge after learning about the bleaching and deodorising etc that makes them look like butter - and that's after the dunking in a bath of hexane to extract the oil, which leaves residues.
I like Irish butter because the cows are outside most of the year whereas Dutch and Danish butter comes from mainly stall fed cows. Grass fed has more good things in it. I was very cross recently having bought a whole load of Anchor butter on special to find that it is now produced in the UK not New Zealand. So whilst it's probably perfectly good British butter, it could come from "super dairies" where the cows never go outside and you would have no way of knowingIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Bit of a funny day today. Someone delivered a plastic carrier to me and inside I found the clothes and one or two items that were found on the body of our Drop-in friend who died on the park bench. How sad is that? The nearest person to him was someone who didn't even know his surname. I have put the bag in the cupboard because I didn't feel up to dealing with it just then.
Okey Dokey, there is a church magazine waiting to be written. Yes it's that time again.

Monnagram, I realised recently that many of my friends don't know my surname or me theirs. Those surnames I do know are generally those I've worked with, it doesn't make them any less of a friend - as I found out over the last week or so. What is important is that you knew and cared about him and he knew that. When the time is right, you'll deal with the bag, until then, just remember you have, do and will continue to make a difference.

I suspect part of the issue might be the (mis)appropriation of chakras and much else by various parts of the New Age movements who often paid no heed to the origins or actual meanings.0 -

MRSVEG PLOT: it is only in the last few months that I have started making soup from the carcass. I find it a real faff to have to make sure I get all the tiny bones out and every time I am tempted to just not bother but I am so glad and feel so good after I have done it. OS has that effect on me.
A question though: when the chicken has been cooked in the slow cooker why isn't the liquid that is in there good enough for stock? Why does it have to be thrown away and then new stock made from the carcass?

Evening all, just checking up to make sure you're all not behaving, and I'm glad to see you're not!!!!! FUDDLE pet, how did the fritters turn out? I hope they were nice, my culinary plans today were totally scuppered by the black beans!!!!! I was making Cuban Beans and Rice for supper and having soaked the beans overnight I duly put them on to cook, following the recipe precisely at 10.30 this morning, well the best laid plans of mice men and cooks often gang agley as they say and at 6.30 when we should have been having supper, I still had hard black little bullets in spicy tomato sauce!!! I whacked the little devils in the slow cooker, I was in danger of the whole lot burning on the hob and now at 10.30 pm they have deigned to soften up, what a shame I had to raid the freezer for a scratch supper earlier. It seems we shall have Cuban beans tomorrow instead. Such are the trials of life, yes?

Stock from SCing a chicken should be fine - it might need reducing a bit, as the SC has a lid nothing evaporates, but other than that it's perfect.
And then you can use the carcass for another lot!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -

I use the stock from the slow cooker and attempt to get another load from the bones, though i find this isn't as well flavoured. (I usually add the second stock to one made from roasting wings and drumsticks)0 -

My Dad was born in a mining town in Co Durham too and my grandad (whom I never met as he died a long time before I was born) was a miner. One of my favourite thuings to do there was go blackberry picking in the countryside near the River Derwent and then we would have blackberry pie and icecream. DH, the kids and I are going to Northumberland this summer, my first trip since around '85. We plan to go and visit my grandma's old house just for the memories, I know I will feel very emotional.
bunbun - hope it goes ok tomorrow. The waiting is often worse than the actual thing. I am sure you will be a great support to your son even if you feel a bit wobbly underneath. Let us know how it went.
