I have had a slice of the fatless sponge I made earlier and it was lovely, although I think that I used a little too much sugar, that comes of not paying enough attention, something you should not do when baking!

Quick Q if I may - can you successfully freeze chillies (only comes in pack for 50p - need 1) to use in dishes once defrosted. Actually the same for ginger?
Yes to both - stab the chillies with a sharp knife and freeze, and ginger - not a problem! (in fact Sophie Grigson freezes hers to make it easier to grate)
Must use my stash up!0 -
Hah - cardboard in your shoes!! Now that brings back some memories. One winter I spent the whole season in boots with cardboard in the bottom to try and stop the water coming through. I was a single parent with my daughter then and had very little money. That particular winter I went without a coat too as I had no money to buy one and even remember going the odd day here and there without anything to eat for myself. But she was always fed and watered, had good shoes and a warm coat.
Nowadays I look back on those times with fond memories.........it makes you appreciate the small stuff in life. I always give to the supermarkets when they are collecting for food parcels etc........0 -
I think our Asd@ was the only one not collecting, no idea why but I popped in specifically to donate and they werent there. I will make a point of buying extra in Ald! again this week and dropping it into the local church collection point box again.0

It's possible to donate monies online via Trussel Trust website. We've got our bag to drop off on Monday connected to A Girl Called Jack's campaign of buying items for £3.0

During term time the support group I run meets in a local chapel which has a collecting box for our food bank so each week I drop some items in, at the moment we are not meeting so I havent been able to do that, I will however make an effort this week to drop my stuff in the local church box instead0

There's not actually a bank in our nearest town but one is opening in the next town so they were collecting for there to get them set up. I hope they keep a collection point there so we can continue to donate. DD2 was with us today and asked lots of questions, she said she'll volunteer to help them when she's 16 (I encouraged DD1 to take a volunteer role as well as a part time job as I feel it's important for their social responsibilities, DD1 helps run the local village youth club, she gets a lot out of it and gets to sit in on AGMs etc, it's all a life experience).
Whilst I do agree that this country is ruined at the moment, I don't believe it's this governments fault, it's down to the years and years of spending without thought to the future of previous governments and citizens. It's just that it's all finally caught up with us....it was inevitable. This will make people stronger, it will make people think about their priorities and however bad it gets, it's not as bad as most of our grandparents/parents went through during the wars."Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. It does make you feel lucky even with all our scrimping and scraping but then again we have the endless support and fab recipes on here don't we. Fuddle we will not be down and we will not be defeated even if we have to send each other food parcels in the bad times and borrow helicopters to keep Mar in sweeties we will make it :beer:Clearing the junk to travel light

I will get my caravan0 -
You brought back the memories there Ginnyknit and Pinkdebster. During my first marriage (not good) I too remember going a winter with cardboard in my boots and always wearing black socks so no-one would notice the hole in the toe. I never forget what it was like and always try to donate. Am glad that our church also has a collection box to donate food items.
There is no food bank here at the moment but have heard that one will be starting close by soon. Will make a point of finding out when and where.
Am lucky nowadays that although have to scrimp and save (as you say ginny) there is only me to worry about. Children up and gone.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0 -

Get well soon Hester x
Neither of my Asdas were doing the food collection.
The trussell trust are opening a new food bank in my local town. The one we've got often has queues.
Best wishes all x0
