    Hello Dashuri, Grandmasam and welcome,
I'd like some hens too, my HA probably would not but with a garden and the garden protected on all sides a coop would be no larger than those who have a shed. And why are hens to be treated different to having a cat, dog, rabbit etc...

The worry always seems to be foxes taking them...what about sparrow hawks that seem to pick off garden birds that are fed. Are they a problem?

Thank you for the welcome. :)

If your HA allows it, I think you could find keeping hens very enjoyable, as they are such characters and very interesting to watch. I can't advise about the predators, as my little bantam slept indoors - well, actually on the end of my bed when she wasn't broody on her nest.... :rotfl:

But I believe there is a let's keep chickens thread on here somewhere that could give you lots of helpful advice. :)

Having said about having a coal fire when I was little, we had one when I first got married. Also had a fifty pence gas metre. I think I may vaguely remember getting something back, I'm not sure. But I do remember the man coming to empty the metre when we had been very careful with how much we used and he said we weren't paying enough for the gas and did something to make it run out quicker. I was very upset with that. Surely though t here are still prepayment metres? Also in my childhood home we had Lino on the floor with a carpet square over it. I remember my and dad getting their first fitted carpet, very exciting. Esther x

  • Evening all,
Big thanks to Mrs C. I made the carrot, cumin and kidney bean burgers and they were yummy. OH wolfed his down and told me I could make them again! I added a bit of harrisa paste to the mix which gave it just the right level of spiciness for us.

Feeling a bit shakey this evening. I think it's because we've had to pay for several big things today: house insurance, TV licence plus a trip to Costco. Even though we'd budgetted for it - I still don't like seeing the sums disappearing from our account.

Maybe interesting times ahead: I've heard that my contract definitely won't be extended beyond the end of September. I was expecting it, but it's still not nice to see in black and white. I've applied for a couple of things recently, and in both cases I've come up as second choice: which is close, but not close enough. Oh well, I've got three months to sort something out.

Enough moping: I hope everyone had an ok day, sounds like there were some lovely outings had by some folk - and hope poorly kitten improves.

Pooky - it does sound like the little cat is feeling a bit better, washing and weeing is a good sign. I would keep up the water, they can do without food, but water is vital. BTW - has she got a runny nose? If she is at all bunged, she will not be able to smell anything and will stop eating and drinking - this is a big problem for our cat who suffers sinus-wise. We had to dabble the water right under his nose for him to be able to smell it.

Out ancient mog has been staggering on since last September, frequently sick and looking unwell, then other times he is better and much more himself. Still as thin as a rake, and very weak (he used to be a strapping lump of a cat).

Suffice to say the state of his poo, wee, vomit and appetite are a constant topic of conversation, no one could say we didn't try to get him better!

Peony - I did a granny square blanket that was just one square, just kept adding rows - so no fiddling about joining small squares. If you want a rectangular one, just work out what size to do six big squares, then join those. Wilcos do an ok DK for £1.35 per 100g balls, I think thats not a bad price.

Well Jel (is that how you say it? :rotfl:) of all the hennies!

All this talk of childhood makes me feel nostalgic and I recognise so much in what others are saying.

I was born during the tail-end of winter in 63, the youngest of 6 children, and I so remember the frost being on the inside of the window-panes, parafin heaters etc... Vic and cotton-wool on your chest if you had a cold. And those awful nylon nighties full of static! :D

Taking lemonade bottles back to the little corner shop to earn a few pennies, lucky bags, and REALLY having to earn our pocket money...I remember getting sixpence a week.

But the freedom we had! Out in the fields, and nearby woods, making camps, picking bluebells, and later in the year being sent into the fields to pick loads of blackberries from the hedgerows to take home to Mum, and also hazelnuts....if we could get to them before the squirrels. ;) Simple joys and pleasures that I wish more of today's children knew about...

Thanks Mrs C - I thougght the washing was a good sign too. I'm not to fussed about the food, moggies have good systems in place to protect their tummies and don't eat again until they are ready. I've dabbed some water on her nose a few times so she has to lick it off....a few drops are better than nothing. I just went to check on her again and she stretched out all the way to her toes before curling back up. A huge improvment on the limp and lifeless lump she was last night.

I'm a big fan of the Wilkos yarns, the acrylic ones I've used have been great to work with and wash really well. Love the colours too. I'm currently doing a blanket with AIdi Aaron, using a large hook it makes nice floppy soft squares, it's going to be the back of the sofa blanket when it's done. My last Wilkos yarn one has snuck into DD1s room because it's "soooooo pretty".

Awwh yes, we used to go round the neighbourhood trying to get lemonade bottles that we could claim the money back on.
And our neighbours had a party line. We didn't have a phone but my mum definately wouldn't have had one with a party line. I just can't imagine having one of them. Dial a disk, yes, I remember that. And we could dial the local radio station and listen to that on the telephone too. Esther x
