I am so envious (in a nice way!) of everyone who has hens...I would love some. I raised a little bantam hen from 2 days old (rescued her) and she was basically a "house chicken" as she was so frail in health (although she did have a run outside) and when she passed away as a little old lady hen 13 years ago, I missed her so much. :A
I'd love more (2 or 3) but it will have to wait until I stop travelling, as I don't know anyone willing enough to look after them if I go away. I love hens, they have such personalities!0 -
Great to see so many new peeps coming out of lurkdom.
I feel the need to make twinks hobknobs so thats my task for tomorrow. rather consumed with crafty stuff at the mo. DGS wants a cushion similair to what they have for babies, like a donut. I have an old clean quilt upstairs so will be having a go with some lovely fabric (£1 per metre :j:j:j with trucks on. Im hoping I just make a roll of wadding enclosed in a fabric tube.
Veggies out back doing very nicely, looking forward to a glut of courgettes just so I can say ' ya boo sucks ' to the damned slugs as it means I have beaten the bu**ers. My redcurrants are finally turning red or they are just embarrassed
Anywho DGs is asleep on the couch so I will be off to play in a minute. Hope you are all having a lovely dayClearing the junk to travel light

We still get coal delivered, and the sweep twice yearly. They both say they're getting busier now with so many stoves being installed. We have a milkman 3 times a week and he nearly always gets through even in deep snow - has snow tyres on his float lol.
Loved reading about old-fashioned bedrooms with lino and crisp white sheets - took me back to my grannie's house, ty.
We were having a discussion here the other day on hospital cleanliness. Thinking the Victorian ward with high ceilings, lino floors, and windows opened top & bottom were a million times cleaner than now. Our local hospital (well 20 miles) has low ceilings, poky wee corridors, and is carpeted throughout. It constantly has wards closed because of novovirus etc. And when the RV was in with a heart attack he watched the cleaner washing the corridor with the same mop he had used in the toilets..
Yes mar also in my grandmothers bedrooms she had what I call "a bucket and shuck it",:eek: ha ha ......I do me a P*ss pot under the bed., well if you pulled it out to quick it sort of went a bit like a tidal wave, and you got some on your hands or the lino floor...:eek:.....There was 3 of us girls use to share the one bedroom when we use to stay the night , so it soon filled the pee pot up...Arhh those good ole memories of the 60 s........
I do still have the coal man deliver to me, its the cheapest way , rather than buy expensive coal from garage forecourts.........
Also get daily paper deliveries, milkman, mind you we are in the country, so deliveries do help a lot........
Respite is going well so far for me, im now on day 4 and feeling a wee bit less tired than I was.......I actually went in to town this morning because I always gets hubbies reading books of history, war etc from secondhand shops, as poor man cant do anything else so I make sure he as plenty to keep him going, I do get them from car boots during the summer and get enough to last right through until the following spring........
Dont pay too much at boots, but can be anything from £5.99 to £16.99 new at shops........I got him 16 books today , some only £1 each...........
I actually went onto BHS and bought myself a nice nightdress, they have 50% off today, which is a bargain........Cant wait to go to bed..ha ha ....
Must say hello to more newbies who have joined us today, nice to hear from you:wave:.....................
Weather not too good today , so much cloud, but its not cool..........
Im chilling in my "hut" for an hour , then I may do some more pottering outside, Sheila.......0 -
Hello Dashuri, Grandmasam and welcome,
I'd like some hens too, my HA probably would not but with a garden and the garden protected on all sides a coop would be no larger than those who have a shed. And why are hens to be treated different to having a cat, dog, rabbit etc...
The worry always seems to be foxes taking them...what about sparrow hawks that seem to pick off garden birds that are fed. Are they a problem?"A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

Been thinking to some our chat may be non specific but we do pass on ideas, experience, support, OS tips but they come up as they may in a conversation and one idea/thought may trigger another. You can also drop in and drop out whenever.
Here's one for the bakers of bread...how and why is it that bread in a supermarket is usually square/rectangle in shape? Ideal for sandwiches...is there something different about the tins/moulds that they use.
I'd like to make a loaf like the Crusts Away one but even if Ihad to cut the crusts off I'm not sure that I could get the texture right."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson

All the neighbours know and I send my DCs round with £1 every so often. So far they've made it back in one piece! I don't know if she's ever had problems, it's an honesty system so there's always money/eggs in the coolbox.
I have a fridge in my front porch and sell the eggs from there , I charge £1 per half doz........Got regulars who come every week without fail........
Ive got 37 goldline browns , beautiful hens that lay every day even in the winter....
Ive got one black sussex and 2 speckeldies............I love hens , and their eggs are super golden yolks..............
The food keeps going up terribly, so its handy being able to sell them to help, plus I couldnt have my garden without hens.............I also have a honesty box, touch wood they all pay, if someone is that starving id give them a dozen , rather than people nick them..........
Ive got so many foxgloves out in the garden and there must be hundreds of bees going in and out of the petals , so lovely to see...........Sheila0 -
I keep intending to keep up with this thread but even this shiny new one is on page 8 already!
I have been thinking a lot about spending and wants versus needs. Plus that the world seems to just move at this frantic pace. Everyone racing to get to the next big thing and never slowing down to appreciate what they have now. It just seems like a big hamster wheel! Plus all the competition over having the best gadgets and cars and holidays and homes. Those are the markers of success that seem to be key. And yet I don't meet any of them. Not sure if it is the sponsorship thing or just getting older but I am realising how wasteful I am and how much I take for granted.
I think there may be a blog post in that ramble if I can tidy it up!0 -
Just got back from the lottie. All of the brassicas are now in, have also planted the courgettes, marrows and butternut squash plants. A lot of the dwarf beans have not germinated so have replanted them, they are one of my favorite home grown veg.
DD2 has been doing the laundry whilst we were out and it is blowing beautifully in the sunshine. The bed linen will go from the line back onto the bed. I can't wait to snuggle down into it tonight (one of the free pleasures in life).
I fancy fish pie for tea so had best get on with it.
Hope you have all had a good day.
Mrs VPI am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order.
