FPK we plant spinach seed direct into the bed it's going to grow in and don't transplant it at all. The little dicot leaves look very fragile and will wilt in this heat very readily so keep them well watered, the other thing that might help is if you can rig up anything to give them a little shade in the hottest part of the day but uncover them at night so they can benefit from any moisture in the air. You might consider planting them in a large pot and leaving them there, that should be a perfectly OK growing medium for them, but might take more watering than in the ground as pots dry out quickly. I had such a lovely weekend with DD1 thank you, we didn't get to do very much wedding prep though, it was just too hot to think. We had to keep spraying the kitten with the water mister as he got so hot and we gave him a wet towel to lay on too, poor little thing!!!

FUDDLE best news that your LL is happy for you to childmind at home, really lovely, well done. Poor Alfie, is he in lots of trouble for eating the strawberries, I'll bet he's being very sorry now and giving you lots of sad looks. Docky has been at the vets all day for a toothy clean and X-Rays of his facial mass, we saw the X-Rays when we picked him up and the vet is mystified but has taken a biopsy and he has 3 little stitches in his muzzle poor boy. The skull of a dog seen in X-Ray is amazingly beautiful, with whirly bones and beautiful smooth lines, bit like a sports car, I know, I'm sad!!!

JEM lovie, just HUGS and lots of them and lots of love coming your way. Life is sometimes tiresome poppet, and this heat doesn't lead to clear thinking or relaxation, wishing you some peace and quiet and gentle times, Love Lyn xxx.

Thanks Mrs. LW. I shall shade them in the afternoon, that won't be a problem and I'm glad to know it is fairly normal for the dicot leaves to look floppy! I've just caught the basil trying to bloom, looks like its time for a good pinch/haircut session! Glad you had a nice weekend!x
  • MAR I've been through the 'sensible' and easy to do cookbooks and have come up with a couple of things you might like:-

Cook the cauliflower in a little bit of water as normal until it is 'just' done. Drain it very well and keep it warm. Melt a goodly knob of butter in a frying pan and gently fry some breadcrumbs until golden. Boil a couple of eggs until hard boiled and cool them before hand and shell them and chop them up and mix them with the hot breadcrumbs then put the cauliflower in an ovenproof dish and put the crumb mixture on top and give it 5 minutes in a hot oven. It's called Cauliflower Polonaise in real life.

The other idea is to cook the cauliflower until it is only just done. Drain it well and keep it warm in a low oven. Fry some bacon rashers until crispy and hard boil some eggs . Crumble the bacon and shell the eggs and cut them into medium pieces, whip some double cream and add the bacon and egg and season it to your liking, then spread it on top of the cooked cauliflower, sprinkle it with a little cheese and 5 minutes in a hot oven.

Both pretty easy to do and tasty, and quick. You don't need to be in a hot kitchen too long in this weather, I'll keep looking and if I find anything you might like I'll post it here, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Not very MSE but I couldn't bear to cook after being in the sun a lot and we got fish and chips. Our chip shop does mini fish and chips very reasonably and TBH I couldn't manage a bigger piece of fish anyway. They're so big the children share even a mini one.

    PS. Sprouts are Satanic.

Delurking to join the sprout lovers! I even like the frozen ones but fresh are best for sure.

I have a summer cold. It is just utterly wrong to feel so ill with a cold when it is so hot. I am very disgruntled. If I have to have colds it should be when it's snowing or at least raining!

I've had fever and chills in the night, so had to fetch the duvet from the boxroom and wrap myself up in it - with the bedroom at 30 degrees

I insisted on trying to go to work today and it was a mistake, I ended up coming home just after lunchtime. Hopefully I will be ok tomorrow as this is the 3rd day of feeling really ill. Bah!
I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

Welcome newbies and old friends, good to see you PIC - anyone heard from Preparedathome recently?

Well a smashing day here, glorious weather.

I was lucky this morning and was offered some organic rhubarb on freecycle so we changed our afternoon plans to go to a local beach and went to one on the other side of the county which allowed a pick-up on the way home.

    We went here http://blueseasurf.co.uk/bhavenn.html
The beach was fab, not crowded, but families having a nice time. The sea looked tropical, and was very warm so we spent an hour swimming about, first time in years I have been in the sea as early as July. Then we had an ice cream on the beach and hysterics when OH tried to dress discreetly and put both legs down one pant hole.

I got about 9lb of rhubarb from the nice freecycle man, so will split between Mrs Next Door and Mrs Over the Road as well. Jam I think is on the cards.

I love sprouts, but would not think of eating them if the sun was out. Frozen are OK if you fry them in butter with bacon...
Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures
  • JPS I know it isn't the weather but hot honey and lemon drinks really do help sweat out a feverish cold and if you can tolerate it a splash of whiskey in the hot drink is very good too! Poor you it must be so uncomfortable in this weather. Hope you feel more the thing very soon, Cheers Lyn xxx.
