We got married in Anvil Hall in Gretna and it was a beautiful venue. We had our reception at the Powfoot Golf Hotel which is about 12 miles from Gretna but in a stunning situation on the Solway firth.
We also attended a wedding (strangers asked us to be their witnesses!) in the registrars office in Gretna and it was lovely inside. I don't know if there is more than one because there was no McDonalds in sight!

I got married at Comlongon and had my reception at Powfoot too; lovely hotel and because, its a bit out of the way, it was pretty much ours for the weekend. The views were amazing.

i know our local registry office, in merton, (SW London) has rooms for 20 or less, thats in Mordon Park Hall, quite a nice setting. In fact loads of registry offices have smaller rooms for smaller weddings.

My friends got married at Hever Castle a couple of years back. It's very pretty and very secluded: http://www.hevercastle.co.uk/wedding-venues-south-east.aspx

That is lovely, my daughter would love it but it is a bit pricey. Think I might have to start saving now. (Or maybe I just won't show her.)

Scotland has very different laws regarding wedding venues so actually you can get married anywhere you like (within reason!)

Have a look at the Humanist Society Scotland website -

    http://www.humanism-scotland.org.uk/content/wedding_ceremonies/

for some background information. I've been at a couple of humanist ceremonies and they have been absolutely wonderful as they are tailored completely to the couple.

You could just hire a beautiful cottage or castle for a week and be married there with only your friends standing round you or even find a seaside / lochside cottage and step on to the beach to be married! (mind you, in Scotland you would definitely need a plan b in case of bad weather)

http://www.littleholidayhouses.com/ or http://www.embracescotland.co.uk/ might give you some inspiration on where you could hold your own perfect small wedding.

Well i never knew that! I guess that if you get married in scotland its exactly the same law-wise as being married here in england?
  • Look at tiny local country churches or chapels - if you want a religious wedding - or more local is this venue which offers a variety of rooms for a ceremony http://www.dortonhouse.net/weddings.php
