Whats the best guard dog/family dog?

As long as the puppy is fully vaccinated I can take the puppy for a walk as much as I like? Not that I have to explain myself to your single braincell but here we go... MOST nights I go running/walking/jogging whatever.....so say Monday, wednesday, friday the dog will come out with me.
Please use however many brain cells you have to read this, especially the last two paragraphs:

Wow! This thread got weird fast. I've read and re-read, and can't for the life of me understand why the OP went so crazy??!! Forums certainly are a minefield.
To who(m) ever pointed out you can't run with a new puppy, well done. But I doubt it's going to save any potential puppy coming into their family from years of discomfort and pain from over exercising when too young.
The general rule for a puppy, particularly large breeds, is gentle lead exercise daily, the equivalent of 5 minutes for every month of age. For example a 3 month old puppy needs roughly 15 minutes per day.
As the OP isn't reading any of this anymore (yeah, right) because she's been so angered, maybe we'll help someone else.
These days it's me who needs more gentle exercise, so I'm off for a walk with my bunch of loonies.0 -
I was saddened by the turn of events on here too. I totally agree about larger breed puppies and extensive exercise.
OP, if you are reading this, I am now on boxer number five. My children and stepchildren have all been brought up with my boxers and they are a fantastic dog to have with children, as they never grow up and will wont to join in with any games that are going on. They have a deep bark and are always listening even when they are asleep!
I have had two dogs (one of them felt the weight of his guarding responsibility, the other one not so much), and three lady dogs and all of them have been as soft as a cushion and daft as a brush.
My sister has always had rotties, they are lovely dogs too. Its a matter of personnel preference.0 -
Unfortunately the dangerous dogs act (1991) has been/is being modified so that if your dog bites on private property, you are held responsible. Sucks
You're right. It's mad. I've now got a tiny Parson Jack Russell Terrier. She's a feisty one - but I think that if I was burgled these days, it's more likely that she'd hide upstairs while I bit the intruder! Are the laws the same if I do the biting, I wonder...?0 -
Another reader who can't understand why OP went 'off on one' they clearly have 'issues' about dog ownership and have not thought through all the options. Dog ownership has changed beyond all comprehension and we now know more about breeds, puppies, behavious, exercise regimes etc than we did in the past. It's certainly been a steep learning curve for me and my two Greyhounds (after a 10 year dog gap we finally had the time to take on dogs).

FWIW here's another vote for Staffies or Rotties
Rottie rescue or Staffie rescue will help you choose the right one as they will evaluate your & your family's needs and they go out of their way to assess each rescue dog that they receive and work with you to give you the RIGHT dog with the RIGHT temprament etc. because they want the dog to have a forever home.just in case you need to know:

Under government plans, there will no protection for burglars and other trespassers who enter someone's property uninvited and are attacked.
Every now and again, the government surprise me by doing something not completely idioticYou keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
OMG what is your life?
As long as the puppy is fully vaccinated I can take the puppy for a walk as much as I like? Not that I have to explain myself to your single braincell but here we go... MOST nights I go running/walking/jogging whatever.....so say Monday, wednesday, friday the dog will come out with me. Tuesday and Thursday we may go to the park with the kids so the dog will again come with us. Weekends as an active family we are out and about and again the dog will come with us. If I decide not to go for a run one night or to the park then the dog will just be taken for a general walk. There you go is that good enough for you??? Seriously GET A LIFE.
So now everyone knows what kind of pup you want, it's a pup that you really won't give a stuff about health wise, a pup that you won't care whether it goes on to develop problems in it's joints. For someone who's had dogs before you really don't know much about them.0 -
Having read all the thread i would like to make 2 points
1) Any burglar that is determined/desperate enough to break in will do so regardless of whether you have dogs. When I had 2 (border terrier x jack russell and a staff x lab) I got broken into - they kicked the staff x lab in the face to shut him up! They were herion addicts ie very very desperate!
2) I don't agree with putting signs up saying Dog Lives Here etc - with all the crazy people going around at the moment marking peoples property if they know dogs live there then attempting to steal the dogs I don't want to advertise the fact I have dogs. I make sure that my gate is bolted so that nobody can enter - there is a front door they can use that if they want to come in.A home is not a home ..... without a dog0 -
OP have you thought of a Jack Russell?. I know a couple of these that would be able to see off anyone they were that keen.0
-
Also tickled by the OP's comment of having a dog "for company"...she has 2 kids! Sounds odd to me.
