Obviously though as an experienced owner you know you can't take a large breed puppy on a run for many many months while they grow and develop, and that they need exercise every day rather than 'most' or 'some'.

    OMG what is your life?

As long as the puppy is fully vaccinated I can take the puppy for a walk as much as I like? Not that I have to explain myself to your single braincell but here we go... MOST nights I go running/walking/jogging whatever.....so say Monday, wednesday, friday the dog will come out with me. Tuesday and Thursday we may go to the park with the kids so the dog will again come with us. Weekends as an active family we are out and about and again the dog will come with us. If I decide not to go for a run one night or to the park then the dog will just be taken for a general walk. There you go is that good enough for you??? Seriously GET A LIFE.

Get an alarm! No one gets a dog for protection purposes anymore! If the dog attacks anyone it will be put to sleep and then what?

Well if the person was in my house and was bitten, then they entered at their own risk :)

  • Hi. I would agree with earlier posting of the Doberman. They are a fabulous family dog- My parents had them from long before I was born to sadly number 5 which passed on last year- I'm now 31. they were wonderful with my nieces aged 4 and 1, and all the family that they knew- they would not bark when family came to the front door- but if anyone they didnt know came on the property, you knew about it from the barking!!

Oh and if you had read my other posts I said I already have an alarm and that I would feel better having the dog there as company when my partner is away. Whats with all the hostile, picky posts? Some people really have nothing better to do :rotfl:

    I recommend a rottweiler.

Many people do not know but they are excellent with children and very protective of their family, also very mean looking. But lovely.

I actually agree with this. My friend has a rottweiler and she is the most loving, loyal dog.

I wouldn't overexercise the pup until at least 18 months, large breeds have developing growth plates and too much exercise could cause some damage which means added expense at the vets!

However a short walk every day would be perfectly fine.

I'm not trying to criticize your choice but just informing you.

Good luck with it all, your kids will probably be jumping around right now at the thought of getting a dog! :D

Oh good grief its all getting too picky this thread. Everyone have fun now because I won't be posting in it anymore. The point of the thread was suggestions of larger breeds and their temperements and its all gone completely off topic. Can't win. Can't say anything right without people taking things completely out of context.

anything that barks gives addittional protection, clearly the bigger the dog the more they cost to maintain

Also anoy the hell out of the neighbours any family dog that's been socialised properly is going to soft as brush.

If you want a guard dog they need to be trained that way and liable to attack you or a family member.

Op judging by your replies to some people I don't think you need a "guard dog" you sound quite capable of scaring most people away by yourself. You sound pretty short tempered and defensive. People are only asking questions and trying to help, which is presumably what you wanted.

I have a collie and I never would have thought it but he is a good guard dog.

He is a big dog and coupled with this he has a very loud, very deep bark. I think anyone would definitely think twice about coming into the house, anyone who does come into the house whom the dog doesn't know I have to watch him because he will "guard" them and is wary until I say it's ok. He is also a loyal dog which is another trait I didn't expect in a collie!

He did very nearly bite a man that came to the door selling Sky, from then on I have to put him in the garden if anyone comes to the door I'm not expecting.

Stroke him however and he is anyone's (if a bit aloof initially)

Collies also make excellent family pets, he is very tolerant of most things but he is neurotic, I can't lock him in anywhere if I'm not in the house. The one time I tried to he chewed his way through a door resulting in a £200 vets trip (he nearly died)
