I always understood that if you found a foreign body in food the first port of call should be your local council's Environmental Health / food safety team rather than the shop you purchased the item from, has that advice changed?

You broke a tooth in half? What was the object, a pipe bomb? Something doesn't add up.

I found some pieces of blue plastic in some bread I bought at Morrisons once. My Dad said to send it to some consumer group or health and safety place. I can't remember as it was a good seven years ago. I know that I heard nothing back and thought that what I should have done is told the local evening telegraph and shamed them that way.

I found an ant baked onto a pringle once and rang them and they told me over the phone that it was just a burnt bit, so I asked them how many burnt bit have legs and an ant style body? I sent it to them and they sent me a voucher for.....................more pringles! Straight in the bin that one went. And they never admitted it was an ant either.
I also found an ant in a meal I was eating in once of those chain pubs and cos they had a famous guest in at the time and cos they were at the next table, the chain refunded the meals and drinks cost for all four of us - I know it was of the guest cos when it happened to my friend about three weeks later they told him to whistle.
I must be rather attractive to ants! :)
  • No I am not a troll, no it wasn't coin in the crisps,
(it was something 'stone like' in a pack of mince - possibly bone?!)

Yes it did break my tooth and yes they have admitted in writing that they have lost it - hence the reason for this post.

I had a similar experience once, so I never return items with foreign object to the manufacturers; I report the matter to the the local Council.

The last time I had to report something like this was pieces of metal wire in bars of SIMPLE soap! It was the first time I had ever bought SIMPLE soap. On the same day I also purchased two SIMPLE talcs; one clearly had a smell of perfume but the other did not.

The local Council were happy to take the complaint about the metal wire but were unwilling to take the complaint about the talc because the officer could not smell the perfume himself. Not surprising as the colour of his hands clearly showed he was a heavy smoker!

While I appreciate their offer of a gift voucher (amount not stated) which is currently on its way through the post, it does not go anywhere near the dentist bill I am soon to incur after breaking my tooth in half!

I did take photo's before i sent it off, I am just so mad they 'lost' the offending item! Is it worth reporting this to the FSA? (which i what I should have done in the first place!):mad:

Have you still copies of the photos you took? Include foreign object and packaging (mainly use by date)?

The retailer can forward this on to the manufacturer and they may recongise the part and take responability etc.
There will be cynics who will say they will deny this. But they do get audited and trends do form.

Have you got a recipt for the dentist work?

I would re-send back to the retailer with this evidence.
If no look, then go to FSA.
