Hundreds facing axe at Kwik Save
The chain has struggled against cheaper rivals
Supermarket chain Kwik Save has closed a third of its stores across the UK, leading to up to 700 job losses.
The group posted "closed" signs at 79 stores in areas including Wales, Scotland, Northern England, the North West and West Midlands.
Last week, Arla Foods stopped delivering milk to the struggling chain because of "payment problems".
Speculation has suggested Kwik Save is facing a cash crisis, despite getting a £50m rescue package in February. "This is a huge number of closures which will affect many workers," said a spokesman for the union Usdaw. "We will be seeing an urgent meeting with the company to clarify what redundancy package workers can expect as well as discussing the long-term future of the business
What got to me today was that staff were given 24 hours notice that they were fired

In Scotland Kwik Save has been a godsend. Many of their stores are in less prosperous areas where not everyone has access to a car & is able to go to the larger out of town supermarkets. In that sense they did provide a valuable service for many folks.
But they ended up getting screwed by Asda, Tesco, Morrisons & Sainsburys at one end and by Aldi & Lidl at the other.
But having been the recipient of some "green" cold meat from one of their Glasgow stores (and by green i don't mean enviromentally friendly) I for one won't miss them too much. Sorry for the staff n'all. And sorry for the communities which rely on Kwik Save. But not sorry for the company itself.0 -
unfortunately they were taken over by Somerfield in my area, Kwiksave used to be the cheapest on alcohol at Christmas years ago. The big ones are limiting our choice. I feel so sorry for the staff especially to be given just 24 hours notice thats a low punch and very unfair.0

a few years ago it was one of the only places to shop in my town, back then tesco was on the pedestrianised precienct (sp?) asda wasn't around, there was no aldi or netto it was kwik save or gateway as it was then. everything started to change when gateways folded and asda bought the store and did it up, then built a big one out of town (that was still a new concept then- early 90s) and then tesco bought a load of land cheap off the council and built a massive store in the centre, aldi built a store, netto bought a store and kwik save just went downhill. by about 1995 it was dreadful, the store was very basic and not brilliantly laid out, choice was not the best and God help anyone who took anything 'No Frills' to school, it was a sure fire way to make sure you got battered.
my dad was insistent we kept going there until even he gave up in about 2000, it was still going till about 2003 then it closed down, by then the car park was invaded by town centre shoppers looking for free parking (somerfield owned it by then) and there was no enforcement, so their actual shoppers couldn't park their cars, in the end it got closed down as part of a town centre regeneration thing.
round here loads have been killed off so for 70-odd to go in one go is the tip of the icebergthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok
