My wife was asked to leave the job after I compainted

    Hi somesavings,

    Do you mind if I ask where you come from? It is just that your English doesn't appear to be that of a native speaker (I'm a teacher of English as a foreign language).

    Perhaps where you come from the husbands get more involved in these matters, but in the UK the help we give our partners is less direct. We give advice and support at home, but the argument is between your wife and the company and you should not be directly involved.

    Sorry if this is not the case, but I thought it was a possibility, and to explain a possible difference in the way things are done.

    I am from China. It's not normal way in China, but at least, my work colleagues never did that to me.

    As it's happened, I would like to have advise on why my wife was sent home because of me please.
  • Maybe to take heat out of situation?

    Think my Mother once had this situation with my father - he was military and has never got 'civvy street' - caused quite a bit of embarrassment over the years - your not alone OP

    Can you define 'complained' in this instance? In other words, what did you actually do and say? If your behaviour was threatening or could constitute a disturbance, then I can understand them shipping her out of the door to be honest.

    Her job was paid by hour. Once, a manager didn't want her to go to a staff meeting, which made her sad. The colleague knew it but arranged overtimes for her to work back the time and didn't tell her it's unpaid. My wife was a low ranking staff and always did what the colleague asked. It was the reason I went to complain.

    I don't understand this.

    If it was "working back the time" then it was making up for time lost earlier. Therefore the earlier time would have been paid and it seems reasonable not to be paid if she was simply making up those hours.

    Or are you saying that there was actually no time to be made up?

    Is your wife chinese? Does she need a work permit?

    I called her a liar, but I left when you asked me.

    1. We didn't know how it would be paid. The colleague knew that the manager had asked her not to come that day, but she arranged overtimes for her without saying anything.

    It looks as though, because you entered your wife's workplace (how?) and were verbally abusive to one of her colleagues, they have decided they don't want the hassle. They may have decided to dismiss her rather than risk you turning up there again; also they may see what you did in a different light.


    In other words they don't want 'trouble'; by dismissing your wife they are making sure it, or something worse, doesn't happen again.

    One question no one has asked yet. Is your wife paid NMW ?. If so, then the unpaid overtime will push her below the legal limit & she would be entitled to the difference.
    If she was paid more than NMW and the overtime took her average below NMW, then again, they have breached regulations.

    It's in the main entrance. They asked me to make an appointment to see the manager and to leave, which I did.
