I borrowed money from family and paid by bank transfer.
Do you know how I could go about finding is insurer (if he had one)
No good then. (You can't use s75 for this type of loan.)
Looks like you will have to swallow this.
There's no register to look up and find out which insurer he used.0 -
Ok thanks anyway. Worth a try.0

Next time, you really need to start a thread of your own.
It ends up very confusing when posts are flying back and forward, between everyone answering different people. Please.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You might have legal expenses cover with your home insurance which normally covers contract disputes such as this.
It will normally only cover claims with at least a 50% chance of success so I don't know if they would take on the case as the builder is now bust. But if you have this cover it would be worth enquiring - it should cost you nothing as most legal policies don't have an excess and claims don't affect your b&c ncd.0 -

It is very unlikely a builder would have had any insurance that covers a payout for him not completing work.
If the builder has gone to the wall, then I see little chance of you getting any recompense here.Optimists see a glass half full

But the builder has gone bust - so there's no chance of success, unless there was a CC payment involved (unlikely if it's a builder) allowing you to pursue them under S75.Optimists see a glass half full

You cant and even if you could they are under no obligation to deal with you directly. They're there for their client not you.
What do you mean "he went bust"? Was he a sole trader and went bankrupt and ceased trading? Was he a limited company and the company was liquidated? Was the liquidation voluntary or not?
You ultimately need to pursue the legal entity your formed the contract with and they may pass matters to their insurers to deal with if there were any.0 -
I don't have legal cover included in my insurance unfortunately so looks like I'll just have to go ahead and pay up.0
