I realize this is pretty unusual in this day and age but I've never owned a mobile phone. I've finally decided that it's time to get one and I'm looking at the various Pay Monthly offers available. They all come with a monthly minute and text allowance. My question, does this allowance cover calls/texts to phones on other networks? So for instance, say I get a phone with O2 and my wife's phone is with 3. Can I then use my monthly minutes to call her for free? Sorry if the answer is painfully obvious but as noted, I'm a complete noob when it comes to mobile phones.

One thing worth mentioning is that some networks offer free calls between it's customers, so it's worth considering the same network as your wife

Depending on your usage and type of phone you want you may wish to consider buying an unlocked handset and then using one of the lesser known service providers such as Ovivo or Giffgaff who offer minutes, texts and data on a monthly basis but with no long term tie in.

In the case of Ovivo they offer 150 minutes, 200 texts and 500 m/b of data for a one off £15 charge. The above allowance is renewed each month at no charge. The £15 covers non standard items such as picture messages, international calls and texts etc.

    They use the Vodaphone network

If, after a few months you decide you want to change then you just lose whatever remains of your £15 balance.
  • If you have managed for all this time without a phone why not buy a cheap Pay As You Go phone and see how you get on. Alternatively has someone got an old phone they could gice you ?

If you get if from somewhere like Carphone Warehouse it will probably not be tied to a particular network so if you find you do use it enough to make a bundle or low volume contract worthwhile you can just put the SIm in whatever the network.

You are not calling your wife 'for free'. You are calling her within your monthly contract charge.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
