I could set up an auto macro to report them every few seconds.

Not right I know and I have not done that but I did report one firm doing a manual macro every time they rang and I can tell you the calls stoped.

A few weeks later I got loads of letters from ofcom one for every macro letter I sent.

I did have a laugh to myself.

    wantme:

Superb! Very well spotted -- I chased all over Google looking for anything about 0870 220 9317 but found nothing. Your detective work is brilliant!

Thanks for the ICO link as well: will pursue this now. :T

Heinz: well yes. Doesn't that say it all?

If you want consumer protection, ring a telephone dialling code that's at odds with everything to do with protection.

Brit: right. I'll follow your lead.

I'm going to positively BLITZ Ofcom with complaints today.

Thanks to wantme's detective work, it's becoming clear this 0870 220 9317 operation is a scam.

    Quick update:

    The Information Commissioner's Office won't investigate the company operating 0870 220 9317.

This is because the ICO only investigates unwanted sales / marketing messages sent by phone / fax / email.

A company which makes unwanted calls but which doesn't leave any message in those calls is clear and free.

So here's the updated list, then:

OFCOM: asks for as much detail of a complaint as possible, and provides a complaint form in which to do so, then says:

    "we don't investigate complaints"

TPS: asks for details of unwanted sales / marketing calls in breach of TSP regs where a TSP-registered phone number is being dialled. Then says:

    "we don't investigate complaints"

ICSTIS: is able to investigate some complaints of some kinds but calls made by scammers using 0870 numbers

    "are not within our remit"

ICO: will handle complaints of unwanted sales / marketing messsages. . . but if no message is left, then

"this is not within our remit".

Am off to have a try with ConsumerDirect. . .

Leaving no message on a silent call is illegal and they can get a large fine.

Problem is you don't know who it is so you are hitting a blank wall.

    A large fine???

    Yay! Way to go!

Or it would be if any UK consumer protection agency was prepared to go that way. . .

I have an idea that maybe someone could look at
when we register by default we register as "Residential"
and as we know it does not always work

    but what if
    http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/ctps/number_type.html

Limited company: (Including organisations such as Hospitals, Schools, Government Departments and other Corporate subscribers)

EDIT YOU CAN ALSO REGISTER YOUR MOBILE. THAT MAY HIT THE UNSOLICITED REVERSED BILLED TEXT MESSAGES ON THE HEAD.

I've joined this thread at the end so I'm not sure if it's a dumb question but, have you tried calling back the number and by pretending to be a customer who is answering a sales message or pitch and is interested, at least finding out the details of the company?

I have done this once before and as soon as they told me who they were I just put the phone down and wrote a letter to the company's head office telling them if I wasn't taken off their list I would complain to OFCOM.

    Worth a try?

    Aaargh! Posts crossed!

Sorry Jarvisma, my post at #19 was NOT aimed at yours at #18.

Oh 'ell, better go and lie down, methinks.

Re calling 'em: well, if this continues, I'll have another go, though resent the fact I've already fallen for what I think is an 0870 call-back cash scam and so would, in effect, get scammed again if I ring them a second time.

I doubt they're a 'legitimate' company at all -- or even, a company -- seeing as their true identity is so hard to trace and the person I spoke to last time I rang declined to say who they were.

But I'll hang on to hear back from ConsumerDirect: it's not a watchdog I've approached before, and maybe this time it'll bite rather than rolling over on its back and playing dead.

Dont do it, I already tried and got silence.
