Credit check at new job help??

I've just been given a job by Mastercard handling their Access Prepaid Cards (the ones like travelers cheques). I've just got my contract through the post today, and it mentions a credit check. Now, I was on JSA, and stupidly used payday companies and catalouges to help with bills and emergency situations. Now I'm really worried they will retract the job offer because of my credit score. It's awful (but I don't have any CCJ's IVA's, just defaults) Could they take the offer back?

  • The reason financial institutions credit check candidates is to see if a potential employees have financial pressures that may lead them to commit fraud to resolve their problems.

It sounds if they've made you a conditional offer - subject to a credit check.

I'm sorry not to be more helpful.

There is no way round this I'm afraid. If you don't agree to the search then the job offer will be withdrawn anyway.
    Good luck.

They will be looking for different things - the are not looking to give you a loan, so a score is of no interest.

As we have no idea what they are looking for, it looks as they are using it as if it was the financial equivalent of a CRB check. Agree with good grace and a smile - it might just work out or you!

I would be interested to hear from James Jones from Experian on this subject!

What information are employers able to see when applicants are being credit checked?

I can speak for two financial institutions (two different banks).....If you have defaults then you are likely to have the offer withdrawn.

Last year I started a new job for a bank, I received a letter to say I had failed the credit check. It was a delinquency balance of £1.....no lies!

It was a mistake, I managed to get o2 to remove it and my job offer reinstated. But the automatic reply from HR was 'Sorry......Goodluck in your future career'

I would be very suprised if Mastercard overlooked Defaults.

    Best of luck!

I've worked for two large banks whilst having a default on my report. I was under the impression they only did a search for insolvency, bankruptcy or CCJ's. you may as well ask them to go ahead with the check, nothing to lose

What would James Jones know about the company's policy in employing someone based on your credit report?

They must all have different criteria. My bank is strict, we cannot give someone with a default a full current account, whereas with others its not so much of a big deal. Your comment compared with mine proves it depends on each institution. Fingers crossed for the OP, nothing to lose.

The High Street banks used to insist that their staff not only not have CCJs etc, but that they had to bank with where they worked, and not have any other accounts or loans elsewhere, to minimise the risk of someone in loads of debt committing fraud to bail themselves out.

When I joined the bank I previously worked for they had a policy whereby you had to have an account with them or provide 6 months worth of bank statements for your current account
