Ppi mercantile credit loan from August 1992

I have put in a ppi claim to barclays that own mercantile credit they upheld my complaint and sent me a £500 cheque as a gesture of goodwill, the ppi they owe me was front loaded on to the loan and the loan was over 60 months ppi amount was £2434.80 the loan was for £7000 and the interest charged was 23.50% I have my original paperwork and also a letter that came with the cheque which proves they sent me the money ,barclays say I have to prove that I paid all my loan repayments of £231.11 the problem I have is that mercantile credit used to issue payment books and I'm sure I paid that way can't find any payment books so what do I do , barclays say no proof of payment then no payout nearly forgot loan is from 1992

If you no longer have any evidence, and the Bank obviously don't, then it is indeed game over for your complaint.
On a positive note, you received £500 from a complaint of 21 years ago-this is 100% more than many in the same position have received.

Correct. The loan agreement is only proof that you once had this finance, it is not proof that you paid it off to completion.
    Sorry.

You are actually lucky to have got anything.

Mercantile was owned by Barclays but a different legal entity. It could have played the "not regulated" card.

Just got statements from my bank and it proves the cheque from mercantile credit was paid into my account and it also shows some direct debit payments to mercantile credit is it worth me pushing this with Barclays as the said if I could show some bank statements they would pay up or do you think they will still find another excuse the ppi was front loaded so I could not cancell it even if I wanted to Barclays are not in the business of giving me 7 grand and not wanting their money back of course I paid them back very confused sorry to drive you mad

Not unless the payments are clearly in relation to your disputed finance. Do you have enough to show that you paid it to completion?

Send them all of them to show you paid it, if there are lots of them, ask them if they want a representative sample or all of them. iT's worth asking if they've already said they'd pay it if you can find proof of payment.

I've got evidence of over half of the payments but not to completion statements show 36 direct debit payments to mercantile credit then I went on to a payment book so it looks like I will have to give up and accept the good will offer

You can write to them again with your evidence, but I agree with you that it's likely just delaying the inevitable...
