Yes - the TEST exists. And it is still called a MOT test. But the MoT itself no longer exists.

The mot test is still a safety and emissions check enforced by the government. Road tax, abolished in 1937, theoretically funded the road network. VED is a car ownership tax and does not fund the road network.Yes - the TEST exists. And it is still called a MOT test. But the MoT itself no longer exists.

All I know is it's referred to as a tax disc by the government and without it I can't drive on the road.
Right, I'm off to hoover the house with my dyson, before I get a headache and need an asprin.

This is correct ^^, you only need explore Youtube a little (or ride a bike) to find out how the concept of "Road Tax" gives drivers the idea that they somehow have ownership over the roads.
I think the DVLA should include a notice on the VED renewal envelopes to state "this is VED, road tax does not exist, VED does not pay for the roads and does not give those who pay VED any more right to use the road than anyone else".
Or similar......“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Completely agree with you. The attitudes of some drivers are truly shocking! Here are a few examples of some people claiming cyclists don't have the right to use the road as they don't pay VED:
