Who honours the 5yr warranty?

Hope this is the right thread on the forum.
I'm thinking of buying a Samsung T.V., a 46" Smart one with bells and whistles!
Samsung comes with a one yr guarantee and is the same price at Currys and my local electrical shop.
I would really have a longer warranty and Selfriges on-line were offering a 5yr warranty with any t.v. Over £400 , but the same model I was looking at was much more expensive.
However since they have a sale on the price worked out the same as other places but with the added bonus of the extended warranty.
Great, rang up last night to check on warranty terms before ordering.
Not as straight forward as I hoped.
Selfridges said, they would come and collect t.v to take back to Samsung for repair etc in the first year, after that it was up to us to contact Samsung.
Rang Samsung this morning, no, after their one yr warranty, it was up to the retailer where it was bought from to sort it out as they had offered the extra warranty.
So, no further forward as I'm getting mixed replies to this.
Any one help?

The entity offering an extended warranty is responsible for the provision of that warranty. What do the T&Cs of the warranty say?0

I would buy from Costco if you can.
They give a 5 year warranty on Tvs.
We have never yet had a problem taking anything back to them.
We had an electric oil radiator that had a manufacturers 5 year warranty, it packed up just before the 5 years. We took it back to Costco and they simply refunded what we paid for it there and then.
We also took back a sat nav and they refunded us.0 -
If the retailer is offering the extended warranty, it's up to them to sort it out.
If the retailer is merely advertising the manufacturers warranty, it's the manufacturer who handles it.0 -
From Samsung's website:
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/warranty/warrantyInformation.do?page=POLICY.WARRANTY
It says they only provide 12 months on TVs. This implies that Selfridges are the one who are offering the 5 year guarantee not the manufacturer.
I just found this: http://style.selfridges.com/whats-in/televisions-selfridges-now-come-5-year-warranty0 -
Many thanks for all replies.
Especially to Leo for the info re Selfridges warranty page.
Samsung do state that their one yr warranty on t.vs over 32" would be apply to home visits, so in theory Selfridges extended warranty would be the same as it states that manufacturers terms and conditions apply.
Will now ring Selfridges armed with their own info page, and see what happens.
Thanks again.0 -
According to the text...The warranty is an extension of the standard manufacturer’s warranty to make five years in total and all the manufacturer’s terms and conditions apply. The warranty provides cover against mechanical and electrical breakdown of the appliance including parts, labour and callout charges during normal working hours (9am – 5pm, Monday to Friday) subject to the manufacturer’s original terms and conditions and exclusions.
If callout is covered, then why say to the OP that they would they would collect and return to the manufacturer?ThumbRemote wrote: »If the retailer is offering the extended warranty, it's up to them to sort it out.
But, as it is a warranty, can't they state their own T&C's?
So could the retailer simply pay the manufacturer to extend the manufacture warranty after the first year, but make the buyer deal direct with the manufacturer from then on ?“That old law about 'an eye for an eye' leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”0 -
Update, but just as confused !
Just rang Selfridges again, was told that the extended warranty is with Samsung, apparently they have a special agreement with them, so that seemed fine, however he then went on to say they only stock Samsung t.v.s,!!
Unbelievable, as I was sat looking at their on- line site, and they stock many more makes, he sounded quite surprised at that!
Going to ring Samsung now to try and clarify this.0 -
This just gets better, rang Samsung, told them about Selfridges answer, they were puzzled as they don't provide extended warranties on t.v,s.
Also there was nothing on their promotion list about Selfridges.
They are now ringing Selfridges about this and are ringing me back.
Thanks to Antonia, the lovely girl in Samsung customer services, who has clarified with Selfridges that is Selfridges own extended warranty.
Now going to ring Selfridges, what a palaver, they should make their own staff aware that customers of large electrical purchases need to be reassured of any warranties issued..0 -
Should have gone to John Lewis.0
