Urgent Advice RE OLD RENT

I gave notice on my old house on the 13th may,
However moved out on the 1st june to a new property,
At the start of may i paid my full rent for the month,
however i was told that despite moving out on the 1st june i would still need to pay rent to the letting agent up to the 12th june
what would happen if i just refused this, It seems silly considering i wasnt in the property

Your landlord may well take you to court suing for rent owed. If he wins & you do not pay you may get a CCJ and have difficulty getting credit or any new tenancies.
Your choice!
What were the EXACT dates of your initial tenancy? How often did tenancy agreement say rent was payable - eg weekly or monthly?0 -
We were in the house for about 18 months, gave a months notice on 13th may , which means our notice ran out on 12th june,
In the meentime we moved into a new house on the 1st june, so have been effectivly paying rent on 2 propertys.
We paid 595 a month, so the letting agent said i owe them 234 for the month of june0 -
i dont know exact date we moved in
roughly 1st march 2012
gave months notice 13th may 2013
moved out 1st june 20130 -

A months notice is 1 month, not half a month. If you refuse to pay for June, you effectively only gave them half the notice. Dig out your tenancy agreement and check what it says - they may be letting you off lightly. It's possible that your rental period is from the 1st to the last day of the month, in which case they could argue for you to pay all of June's rent!0 -
On what date of each month were you paying rent?
This is important: once your initial "shorthold" tenancy has expired, you are legally obliged to give one month's notice, and that month must begin on a rent day. So if you always paid rent on the 1st of each month and gave notice on 12 May, that would be considered by the law as giving notice of a month from 1 June (the next rent day); so you would be legally obliged to pay rent for June.0 -
You give tenants a bad name, pay your debt. it's your fault you paid for 2 properties not your landlords.0

yeh we paid on the 1st of each month0

You should pay it as you owe it. If you don't you will risk your financial reputation which could cost you a lot more in the long run. You should have given notice on May 1st.:j Trytryagain FLYLADY - SAYE £700 each month Premium Bonds £713 Mortgage Was £100,000@20/6/08 now zilch 21/4/15:beer: WTL - 52 (I'll do it 4 MUM)0
