Cancelling a mobile contract due to poor service

Hi Everyone,

What, please, are the chances of me successfully cancelling a 12 month mobile contract (after 2 months have passed), due to the horrendous state of the service I receive?

Basically, I joined Talktalk mobile two months ago and the reception quality is horrific - dropped calls, failed texts, no ability to browse whatsoever - to the extent that I feel this is a failure to supply the service I pay them for.

How I go about 'proving' that, what they will do if I cancel the direct debit, etc., etc., are all issues that I wonder if anyone else has had any dealings with before please.

Thanks in advance.

what ever you do, dont cancel the direct debit. It will completly mess you up.

You generally dont have much chance of getting them to cancel the contract unless the whole network has been down for some time.

have you had bad service for the 2 months you was with them, and how come its taking you this long to try and cancel?

you will need to contact talktalk and see what they are willing to do about it first and then take it from there

None - TT don't have a 'network' they use a proper network to make and deliver calls - your coverage issues are those of Vodafone. So the T&C's do not guarantee overage everywhere.

See out you minimum term and leave - anything else is risky.
  • To answer a few of the questions. I'm only just into the second month, as I had been hoping and praying the signal would improve (absurd I know).

Signal performance is routinely poor just about everywhere. 3G flickers on sometimes but you'd need to take a photo to catch it before it reverts to H or, even worse, E, which I understand stands for 'Edge' and is the worst signal.

I also downloaded an application called OpenSignal from the Play Store last week. Bearing in mind that duration, it tells me that my average signal strength has been 28% of maximum, and that I've had no signal at all for 20% of the time the phone's been on, which I find unacceptable.

I don't live in the sticks either; it's a town so they've no excuse as far as I can see.

H is better than 3G, you do know that??
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

You do realise that "H" is better than 3G?

It stands for HSDPA and is a faster version of 3G.

  • Hello.

I didn't know that (I had in fact been told the exact opposite by a colleague and just had to look it up myself to check), but all I typically see is E for the vast majority of the time (or no signal). I also honestly don't notice any difference when H does show up.

I have emailed TalkTalk but I'm not expecting much of a response.

A salutary lesson for me. In future I think I might get a free PAYG SIM from any network I'm considering joining and see how it performs before committing to a contract. Maybe I just happen to live and work in TT deadzones...

thanks again to everyone who took the time to reply.

The PAYG sim test is what is recommended on this forum ..
I would myself backup data and factory reset the phone just in case its software glitch . Likewise i would ask for a new sim card .

What does the coverage checker show for your area?

Which handset are you using? If it's the Galaxy Ace the issues you are experiencing may be due to a known software issue.
