that amount would include child benefit too

Thanks I did realise that. I just wondered how they could be so exact about the figure unless they knew the new award from tax credits when they can no longer claim for the OP.

I am not dismissing the OP's concern to 'make up' this money - very commendable. Just wondering if the figures are correct. As I pointed out if the OP was on JSA he couldn't make up this loss.

maybe they have used a benefit calculator>

the amount lost for the eldest child always seems disproportionately large because on an income of xk with 2 dpendant kids, to a family on the same amount but with only 1 dependant child.... the tax credits drop rapidly

as the OP's parents receive over £70 a week in child related benefit, its odds on that they have a seriously restrictive household income.

you cant expect them to support an extra adult on an income intended for just 2 people

me? I dont expect them to support him, £200 seems about the going rate for board, thats how much i paid in student halls. Wouldnt have expected to pay my parents significantly more than that.

Problem is these days that people make a profit out of their children and when they come of age they can't make ends meet. Although thats probably one for DT

£50 a week for catered halls of residence - that must've been a long time ago!

I paid £102 a week for catered halls of residence - in 1997-1998!

haha it actually wasn't, but it was in scotland not london, must be cheaper up here.

Guess im in the minority in thinking a full time student shouldnt be paying the 'rents £300 per month. Dread to think how much they'd charge if he was a full time worker

the OP said that was the amount that would be lost, not that was how much he was expected to pay.

It's what happens when families rely on benefits to raise children.

    stop being so pious.

you dont know the background of the family.
they may have all been working and receiving no benefits at all 6 months ago

things happen that are beyond our control.
they are obviously raising their family well as the sons main consideration is contributing the the family rather than asking what benefits he may be entitled to
