Student needing some help!

I'm currently at college on a bricklaying course, have completed both Level 1 & 2, course ends in a week or two. I have been applying to jobs so i can earn some money over the summer and hopefully continue with it into the new year providing they allow me a few days each week off so i can continue my course which starts again in september (level 3).

I live at home with my parents, they currently get £72/week for me but that stops come August when i hit 20 so i need to find some way to make up that (£300/month) Unless somewhere takes me on i have no money coming in, i claim nothing and according to the people i have spoken too i can't claim anything either.

Myself and my parents are lost, no idea what to do as £300 is a lot of money to lose each month, too much.

Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

so your parents are making you make-up the benefits they have lost by you turning 20? thats pretty unreasonable for a student.

I think you should just not bother with level 3 and get a full time brick laying job. Otherwise how will you eat lunch/get the bus etc if all your part-time wages go to the parents

I think it's eminently reasonable that parents should expect a 20 year old to pay towards his/her keep if they're on a low income.

OP you need to get some part time work alongside your course or advertise for some basic bricklaying work (raised beds/garden walls etc) on a self employed basis.

of course it is but theres a big difference between looking at their bills and working out how much it costs them to have him living there and working out an amount based on the generous benefits they used to claim

as the OP's parents receive over £70 a week in child related benefit, its odds on that they have a seriously restrictive household income.

you cant expect them to support an extra adult on an income intended for just 2 people

I think it's right that i should make up the money, i intend to live here etc.. so its fair that i should pay my way. Part time job that can work with my college course is exactly what i'm looking for, giving up on level 3 is not an option. The other issue with jobs is i have crohns disease, regular check ups, tablets etc which means i may need a day off here and there.

Only one person works which is my dad, postman which supports 4 of us (Dad, mum, younger brother and myself)

Well ill continue to apply any and everywhere and hope for the best.

    Thanks for the help

Right, I take it you are full time at college? Have you been applying to all the house builders, brickies etc in the area? Have you approached the CITB to see if they can give you any idea of companies who are looking for part qualfied brickies? If you join a construction company they will get grants to help you continue with your apprenticeship.

As your dad works then the child tax credit awarded just for you seems rather high.

Your family may still be entitled to tax credits for your brother. Is this the amount of tax credits that are awarded at the moment and your family expect to lose it all?

Bit of confused as to how it has been worked out when there are two children.

Having said that I do think you should be expected to earn some money to give as your keep. However, I would be querying the amount as if you were on JSA you couldn't make up that amount if you gave all of it to your family!

Nothing will change for my younger brother, just talking about myself. Have done all the CITB assessments etc.. did the last one not a week ago so now waiting for them to get back to me. I spoke to a brickie on Monday which has told me to give him a ring when i'm available. As i said i have Crohns disease, this month i'm being put on a new tablet and have no idea how it's going to affect me, hopefully all goes well and i can work for the bloke. Has even offered to pick me which will help a lot as i wont have to pay for travel.

Good luck, you seem responsible and ambitious. I hope you find something very quickly and able to help your parents until you can support yourself fully.
