Upgrade Sky BB to Fibre

Options
I'm looking for a new phone & BB provider and I'm thinking of trying Sky's standard BB service which will be free for 12 months. I'm a little concerned though as BB speeds arent too good where I live.

I've asked two people at Sky if its possible for me to sign up for the 12 month contract deal for their standard BB to see what its like but then upgrade to fibre at a later date if the standard BB speeds are too slow for my needs - if I did this would be within the 12 month contract period.

Both people have said yes, but as both conversations were pretty hard going I'm not sure if they are fobbing me off to get me signed up or if its actually true.

Does anyone here know if they would allow me to do this or are they just fobbing me off in the hope of getting a new customer?

It is an upgrade, rather than you leaving/terminating, BUT you need to have their policy confirmed, as they may insist on the minimum term being met.

The delivery method to you will not change - YOU still will not 'get fibre'. Just the same copper wire you always had, so do not believe the hype. It is simply misleading marketing - any service you get initially will already use fibre, the distinction is only that it gets a little closer to you.

The fibre goes from the exchange to your closest cabinet. Then from the cabinet to the house is done by using the cables the adsl/phone uses now.

Thanks for your replies. Thought it was strange because nothing had been changed in our street byt they say fibre is available.

New fibre box is only around the corner from me, couple of hundred feet away and copper cable to my house replaced last year so hopefully the service will be ok.

Will try calling them again and see uf i get a more definate answer.

Do you get the speed increase though? I want to move up as 2mb isn't cutting it and my basic broadband is not stable at all, constantly dropping upload speed. If I pay for FO do I get my 40MB/19MB or not?

I was on 7.5Mb/s when I had ADSL, which is pretty close to the theoretical max for this type of connection. I'm not far (<500m) from the exchange and had good stats.

I then moved to Sky BB Unlimited (ADSL2) and my speed eventually rose to 19Mb/s. I'm now on Sky Fibre and get a rock solid 40Mb/s.

Well im on 2mb at the moment, so I'd be very happy with 40.

    I'd be happy with 10mb!!

I have a lovefilm subscription but find I hardly use the streaming because it takes ages to download films especially as a lot of them are now HD. Hopefully the couple of extra quid I will pay for fibre means I will be able to fully use my lovefilm subscription.

I was on 02 before at around 6mb mark since fttc i get 40 mb at least the programmes never buffer now, watching F1 the clarity is superb compared, well worth a few extra £'s.

I dont want sky TV, I dont want to change my phone from BT.

Currently on 4mb on a good day. I would like FTTC. But is BT my only option? £23 or £26 a month? And im sure its £50 install?

Don't know about your area, but I have the choice of BT, Sky or Plusnet for fibre. Think Plusnet were £19.99 per month, Sky £20.

As for the £50 charge, it seems to depend on the package. I've seen one or two where they don't pass on this charge, but Sky do. I made a complaint to Sky the other week and the person I spoke to is calling me back next week to discuss my options. If they don't do something about the £50 charge (waver it or take something off my bill to compensate) I'm opting for Plusnet.
