I have board books that my eldest is allowed free access to (she'll sit and "read" to the dog for hours), and I keep the storytime picture books for when I'm with her until she's past the "ooooh paper scrunchy scrunchy rip rip rip" phase. She loves books but doesn't have the knowledge and motor skills to deal with paper books and not rip the pages independently at the moment.

The screeching - it's a blooming horrid phase - we got it out of the way with relatively early - I did it by showing no reaction at all and gritting my teeth, then trying to distract her.

Cat hitting - we're fighting this one at the moment, just constantly guiding her hand if she tries to and showing her how to stroke gently instead - I HAVE taken the collar off the cat so she's not got that to grab onto for obvious reasons.

My 2 yr old does this usually if she thinks she isn't getting enough attention, I give her one warning, stop that now or you will go on the step.
The key is to always follow through, if they do it again straight on the step whilst firmly expaining, you are on the step because you screamed.
At first she was on the step every five mins now a week later it is a very very rare occurance, which is dealt with in the same way, if you let dealing with it slide she will slide back into doing it
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

Sounds like a two year old to me *shrugs*. Seems a bit mean to say he's got a 'bad attitude'. He's two! Sit with him when he's looking at his books, if he tears them, take them away and leave him alone for a few minutes. Take him out of any situation that he misbehaves in, e.g. if he's playing with someone and plays up, then gently remove him until he's calmer. Ignore the screaming. Ignore the cat hitting; the cat can look after itself and the baby will soon stop once he's had a few scratches.
