Want a New convertable laptop - but is Windows 8 a real problem?

Advice, please, good people.

I want to buy a convertible laptop/tablet and I am thinking of getting the Lenovo Yoga.

Only thing is, it has Windows 8 as its O/S and I have heard that people have problems with it.

I would definitely use the Laptop for work, as well as web-surfing etc, so would use the MS office which is bundled with it - but it is a pared-down version. On my Desktop, I use Office 2010. Am I going to be able to switch documents between the two?

Would appreciate your comments on whether this would be a good buy for me.

thank you in advance :-)

Afaik you are allowed to install your full Office 2010 on to both devices. With Professional, one user can use it on a desktop and a laptop. With Home and Student you can install it on three.
  • Thanks very much for the replies, it's been helpful.

thinking I should go for it!

I didn't think you can get the 'full' office on Windows 8 RT, hence the original question.

Personally if I was going down the windows tablet route I'd avoid tablets with RT and try and get proper Windows 8 despite the price and battery life performance, as I'd be annoyed at having Windows but not really 'having Windows'. However if you've made your peace with that already and are fine with RT, then as far as I'm aware, Office RT and a full Office, eg Office 2010, are compatible, though some features on RT are unavailable.

Where is RT mentioned? The Lenova Yoga is a thousand pounds ultrabook!

(It is the Office 2010 Starter edition that is pared down, not the operating system.)

There's both a Windows RT and a Windows 8 version, this is the RT version:

I was assuming it was the RT version as the post above is asking about the version of Office that comes with it which is a feature of RT but not Windows 8 (bar some OEMs may ship a trial version).

Assuming it is the RT version I wouldn't buy it myself, if wanting Windows I'd go for a Windows 8 based machine (performance is pretty good on low end hardware so Atoms aren't too bad) or IOS/Android.

    Which Yoda are you after?
Yoda is a bit heavy to use as tablet, IMO

These are not the tablets you are looking for.

Don't worry about windows 8, despite Bill spending more time on Africa than in developing it 8.1 will bring back the start button and new features. Meantime there are loads of apps to get back to the Windows 7 look and feel. After a few months I quite like it now, and I'm a pensioner.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Win 8 is fine, you do have a start button, a physical one! The one with the windows logo on.... not difficult just different. I run it on a netbook, laptop and tablet. I also use a win8 mobile...

If you read Lum's thread on Windows 8 (search in this forum, or use this Overclockers post), you will have all the information you need to mitigate the pernicious effects of the [STRIKE]Metro[/STRIKE] Modern interface.

That Metro/modern interface I can understand people having a problem with when they, like me, install it on a non-touch desktop computer with a mouse. OP is buying a convertible tablet with windows 8, where that interface makes a lot more sense (and the traditional desktop one makes less sense). I think it would be bonkers to buy a tablet type Windows 8 device, and try to get rid of the new interface, THAT is where it DOES work.
