You can eat them but they're quite tough I find. My OH uses the pods from the peas and beans to make soup. It's similar to pea and ham soup and very nice. We have no waste from our peas and beans at all. We eat pea shoots, eat the peas and beans and use the shells. The chickens eat what's left

Edit: Im not sure how he makes this soup and he's out ATM but I will ask him when he returns
