The garden definitely needs *softening* with flowering shrubs and specimen trees. I would also plant a wisteria as suggested by a previous poster. The shutters certainly need to go :p

Personally I'm not a fan of this type/age of house, but agree that they are fairly adaptable and can be moulded to suit a variety of requirements/redesigned due to lack of original features. If it were me, I would want to change the windows to something more interesting.

I also quite like the idea of cladding - IIRC there was a Sarah Beeny programme once where a couple clad a 1970s house and totally transformed it from a characterless box into something far more attractive. More recently another homes show (Double your home for half the money.....or some such?) did something similar and the New England style result was amazing.

We actually have an ugly 1980s extension on the back of our 200+ year old non-listed house and intend to clad this as demolishing it is not an option. We will be using timber painted to match (or contrast with - haven't decided yet!) the rest of the lime-washed stone rear elevation......

would be tempted to apply a light cream or white render to the right hand side of the house to take away from the mass of red brick.

It's such a shame how so may reasonable looking houses have been spoiled with ugly extensions

I'd turn bedroom four into an en suite.

Some colour is def needed on the front. It lacks kerb appeal.

Thanks everyone. It's one of those houses where it isn't love at first sight but has a lot of potential (in a great area for this town) We're potential buyers by the way.

I know what everyone means about the car park garden - that would have to go straight away, we would probably extend or stick a nice conservatory on and replace the grass

Just can't "see" it from the front - thanks for the suggestions - defo think painting the extension, getting rid of the shutters/roman plinth, and softening with a climber like wisteria/clematis would help.

Has anyone else had the "don't love it but would make a v practical house feeling?" I wanted this one but its STC!!!
