What could you do to this frankly rather 70's looking frontage? Would those horrible window shutters come off? Is it worth it?

  • I'd take off the shutters, yes. I think they'll just be bolted to the wall. Apart from that, I don't see any issue with it.

Looks like a nice house. Wish you could get a four bedroom detached house for £160,000 near where I live. Having said that, lol at the shutters :) I think I would remove them.

I would take the shutters off and clean the bricks below ( they look stained). I would also do something with the garden, looking at the street view it looks very untidy and overgrown.

Is there something you can do with the back garden also which looks like a carpark. Can you section off a seating area and soften it with pot plants.

    Good luck with your sale.:)

I agree with lushplus - I would inject some colour to the front and the back of the property by adding pot plants, trellis, benches to add interest and distract from the brown uniform of the house. I'd also paint the brick wall surrounding the house.

Are you buying or selling the house?

I would leave it as a 70s looking frontage, minus the shutters.

True it's not very special, but it's no different from millions of others. Trying to make it something it's not will only end up looking silly, like the shutters. The front garden has the ability to house planting that would soften things a bit and draw the eye from all the brick.

The rear garden is the real challenge with this house, but decent high gates would give the privacy most people would want. After that, it would depend on the number of cars owned and the intended use of the garages.

Great house, nice layout, good sized gardens.

Front revamp - depends on how much you want to spend.

Remove shutters and then clean brickwork to start.

Tackle the garden, remove those awful badly shaped conifers and then replant with a judicious mix of specimen trees, some shrubs and year round colour. A flowering climber trailed up part of the wall would soften the look for a temporary measure.

Then as and when you have the time and the money you can change the facade in all sorts of ways. Cladding, new windows, nicer front door, tile hanging, paint etc

The beauty of 70's houses is that they are so adaptable, they look particularly good when given a "New England" style treatment.

The worst bit about 70's houses is the windows, sometimes a low pitched roof which can look rather out of proportion. The roof of that one doesn't look too bad. I would definitely change the windows into something more attractive and the results would be quite amazing.

The back "garden" is dire. In agree it looks like a car park.....

However, it looks a good size and I think you could really do things with that.
  • Totally agree that the problem isn't the house - it's the awful garden which makes it look so stark, and planting pretty much anything would improve things. I'd fancy putting in a wisteria, climbing up around the back door.

Not a big fan of cladding, as IMO it can date quickly and often makes a house stick out like a sore thumb within its street. (Also it can be a pain if anyone in the future wants to get rid of it.)

I wouldn't be put off by the front at all - didn't even notice the shutters :D

It's the back which imho needs big attention - is that a boarded up window to the L of the back door? And strips of blinds for the French windows on right make it look like a prison on the photo! (apologies if you're selling but I assume you want people to be honest).

Garden can be easily done up to help, as others have said. It actually looks like a v. good, secure space, therefore a positive.

I have just noticed there are shutters on only one window, so yes it looks really odd.

I agree with previous poster that the patio windows look like there are prison bars on them.
