Nationwide Cash Card + Basic Current Account Rejection?

I am wondering if there's anyone who can answer a query for me regarding the opening of a nationwide cash card plus basic current account. I've already posted this elsewhere on this website, but i think i posted on the wrong forum (i was using my phone to post). So apologies but....
My boyfriend applied for this account in branch, because he was informed that no credit checks are completed as there is no overdraft etc. This is confirmed by our research on the internet. He has a savings account with nationwide but has no current account with any bank.
However, he has been rejected and we can't think why, especially if his credit rating isn't checked. But even so, he has no outstanding debt other than student loans and has a job, and his wages currently go into his savings account.
We cannot think why he has been rejected. The letter says that we can enquire further by telephone, but I was wondering if anyone could think of any other reasons for being rejected for an account, outside the credit rating issue.
He fits the obvious criteria such as age. And has always lived in the UK. We are just completely baffled. We are considering contacting the CAB to help put some weight behind our enquiries.
thank you in advance to anyone that can shed some light.

It is highly unlikely that no credit and/or other automated check has been carried out, regardless of what you read on the Internet. That check may have revealed nothing (e.g. not found on Electoral Register), which in itself would be a problem. But it might have revealed other things that might be a problem.
What do your boyfriend's CRA files look like? Why is he seemingly concerned about people looking at his credit files? Is there a possibility of mistaken identity? Why are his wages going into a savings account rather than into a current account? Is he on the ER? What was he told in Branch why his account wasn't opened there and then?
You need to really establish the facts before you try anything with "weight behind our enquiries".0 -
A search is still made of credit reference agency files...even for a basic account. After all, they want to check that a) he actually exists (ER status), and b) there's no adverse public information (bankruptcy, CCJs, etc).
Is he on the electoral roll at the address he supplied during the application?0 -
Thanks for your replies.
I only say that no credit check is compelted because that's what we were told in branch when applying. Not sure why they didnt open it there and then. We were just told to fill in a form and hand it in. His wages are going into his savings account because he cant get a current account. He had a student current account with santander but when finishing uni, they sold his overdraft debt to a debt company, which he has now paid in full.
And the reason he is concerned about people looking into his credit is that he has previously replied for regular current accounts and been rejected and had though this was due to credit rating issues.
Apologies if the facts arent too clear. I'm not really savvy about finance, but am slowly picking things up.
As to whether he is on the electoral role, im not sure so am going to check this with him.0 -
this goes a long way towards explaining the rejection. This will most likely be on his credit files for 6 years from the date of the default. Could mean he has to wait until the 6 years are up before he can have a current account.wehavsound wrote: ».... they sold his overdraft debt to a debt company....
Yep, he is almost certainly right, see above.wehavsound wrote: »And the reason he is concerned about people looking into his credit is that he has previously replied for regular current accounts and been rejected and had though this was due to credit rating issues.
He should get on there asapwehavsound wrote: »As to whether he is on the electoral role, im not sure so am going to check this with him.0 -
I recently opened a nationwide cash card account. I was still accepted even though I am not on the electoral register, they simply asked me to take ID into my local branch (photo driving license or passport .. I took both just in case lol). After doing this my card arrived 2 days later.
So I'm pretty sure its not anything to do with not being on electoral register.0 -
wehavsound: Applying for a normal current account will leave a search mark on one's credit file. The paid-off debt, and lack of history will also be clear.
I suggest he firstly obtains a copy of his credit file (£2 each for the statutory report from experian and equifax) to check things are accurate (and if he's not on the electoral roll, he should add himself to it).
Then, it's probably just worth trying to open a basic bank account. He should be able to get one of these, but you need to be careful about which account you are applying for. I'm not sure I quite understand the cash card+ reference. I think nationwide used to offer the flexaccount in two forms - cashcard+, or with full debit card. Now as a new customer one can either apply for the Cash Card Basic Current Account, or apply for the full flexaccount.0 -
He should go into barclays they can open your account straight away if he tells them he isnt bankrupt and explains the truth they will help.
He could get a cash card account with debit card.0 -
Hi,
I've applied for a Nationwide cash card and was accepted. At first a search showed up from them, but when I checked recently, a fresh credit account has been opened by them. There is no overdraft involved... could this be a mistake on their part?
Thanks.0 -
All current accounts show on credit files, regardless of any overdraft facility being in place or not.Hi,

Thanks.Credit 'Score' - Don't buy the credit 'score' that Experian, Equifax and Noddle want to sell you. It's an arbitrary number that means nothing when it comes to applying for credit.

It won't be a fresh credit account at all it will be the cash card account that you opened. Nationwide report the basic account to the CRA's just as barclays do with their very basic cash card account.Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0
