I had a week self catering in Tenerife last year. My two boys (4 &6 at the time) and myself.

We covered taxis to and from the apartment to the airport. We ate breakfast and lunch in the apartment, evening meal out, soft drinks by the pool bought from the supermarket and an ice cream a day for the boys. We came back with a pair of shoes and a skirt for me and a couple of tops for each of the boys, as well as £215 of our £500. :D

Soft drinks bought from pool bars etc are often expensive -Pack your own plastic big tumblers or tumblers with lids if you prefer and stock up on the 2 ltr bottles of soft drink at the nearest supermarket.

A sandwich lunch with local bread, ham and crisps is incredibly cheap when prepared in your apartment. Pack suntan lotion it can be very expensive in resort -same can go for sun hats for the kids.

Breakfast out can be a bargain -especially if you eat late enough that you don't really want lunch. A lot depends on your eating habits at home - but often in the heat I find I don't want a heavy meal anyway. If the kids have a preferred ceral-pack a box -it can be a rip off in resorts. I always pack coffee-as I'm picky about my brand and it's expensive abroad.

    I think you'll be fine.

And definitely pack tea if you drink it. Not only is it expensive but usually carp!
  • Its difficult to decide on how much to take. It depends on your spending habits. We are thinking of taking £500 for 7 days, so perhaps £800 for 11. I'm sure £1000 is plenty.

What you mean is that British brands are expensive abroad because they have to be imported especially for the tourist market. The local brands are as cheap, if not cheaper, than what you are used to. Anyway, you are on holiday so it's worth trying something new rather than insisting on the same product that you are used to.

There was a post on one of the Tripadvisor forums where a bloke was whinging that bread was ludicrously expensive in Cyprus... he'd paid over 4 Euro for a frozen Kingsmill loaf.

Fresh locally baked loaves are about 90 cents each.

    How very condescending of you.
I mentioned brands rather than generic coffee specifically for a reason....
After fifty years of travelling (mostly independently rather than resorts beloved of Brits) I'm probably a little more adventurous and travel savvy than you appear to be a$$-uming !!!
