So in answer to whoever said they've never seen a kid in a cinema with ear defenders, well, you obviously don't go to my local then :)

    Obviously! :)

I've been to a few without, but the indoor/arena ones, I've wore them, as I do find them too loud sometimes, and I hate the ringing ears afterwards :( I forgot them when we went to the MGM Grand at Las Vegas to see Motoey Crüe and Aerosmith, and I have to say, it was too much for me, it was unbelievably loud! I wasn't feeling that good anyhow (think I was dehydrated), and having seats high up gave me vertigo, all 3 combined was too much, and we left half way through Aerosmith, thankfully they were mainly playing old stuff and not the newer stuff I'm more used to so it didn't matter as much. :)

Yes you're right about the indoor concerts - Greenday was outside and that was loud enough but I went to see Biffy Clyro at the O2 and it was even worse. I've never had ringing in my ears even though I went to concerts without earplugs when I was younger so I think that everything is much louder nowadays as I also don't remember having a problem with cinema adverts when I was younger.

I always have some sets of disposable earplugs in my handbag now but perhaps it is just me getting old rather than sounds getting louder.

I agree, it seems like everything has to be bigger and louder nowadays, and that's not always good.

We were at the MEN Arena and there was this young lad about 10 or 11ish, and he was totally overwhelmed by it all, the noise, the crowds and the heat, the staff wouldn't let him go outside because if he did he wouldn't be allowed back in. They opened the door slightly and the poor thing had to try and get abit of fresh air.

I think 10 is too young to be standing at a concert.

I remember a few years ago I went to a Paul Weller indoor concert and it wasn't that loud but unfortunately we were right by the speakers and as we didn't have any earplugs we put bits of tissues in our ears and it worked quite well.

Same with airshows we used to go to when I was a kid, best bit was the noise. We took DD and DS to an airshow two years ago and they loved it too, no ill effects.

The ill effects aren't instant so you have no idea if their hearing was damaged.

Hearing is too precious to risk.

I have a pair of these ear plugs:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/ACS-ER-20-Frosted-Ear-Plugs/dp/B004SBSOKK/ref=sr_1_14?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1371415660&sr=1-14&
They are great because you still enjoy the full spectrum of sound but all at a lower volume. So you can still hold a conversation, enjoy music, etc.

I wear them whenever the environment is too loud to hold a conversation with someone 2 meters away e.g. every gig, concert, club, noisy pub, cinema. The bit that sticks out your ear is transparent so nobody knows you are wearing them (and my hair covers my ears anyway).

I wouldn't hesitate to put ear defenders on a child in the cinema, it is way too loud.

That's the best bit about going to see a Grand Prix - the noise!! Well that and the oily smell, but the noise, wow!! I wouldn't have thought of wearing earmuffs, even when I went to my first race aged 11. Although I've never been posh enough for a grandstand ticket, only ever sat in the open.
